LiveJournal Public Service Announcement
Feb. 12th, 2004 06:51 pmThis is a topic that comes up so frequently on my friends list that I just want to state my position on it here.
At some point practically everyone on LiveJournal wonders aloud why their deepest, most personal posts get almost no comments while everyone has something to say on their silliest, most vapid posts.
I'm here to tell you that it's not just you, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you, and it doesn't mean people don't care. It means we don't know what to say. I mean, do you really want me to make some stupid, vapid comment on a post that clearly means a lot to you?
Sometimes it's hard to know what to say on the important stuff. But everyone's got an opinion on silly stuff. It's a lot easier to discuss your favorite Survivor than deep, life-and-death type issues for most people.
Just a thought.

Date: 2004-02-12 03:57 pm (UTC)I struggle with words sometimes... and sometimes I make the tough posts at times when there aren't that many people around... They don't read all the back posts... and they say point anything important out to me... well, how do you say... *jump up and down* here I am, I'm important here...this is incredibly important to me so here... see my pain.. see my love.. see my memories that rock my world...
*sigh*... that is why I always go back and read... because I don't want to miss anything that is important to my friends, even if I don't always comment

Date: 2004-02-12 05:51 pm (UTC)but i *know* people are busy, and when i've had a chance to speak with or IM my friends, they are in fact excited for me... i guess just it took me by surprise, because everyone is so generously well-wishing when i have happy job news. but i think a lot of people are in shitty places romantically right now. in which case, i'm not gonna complain. ;)
also i think there's some kind of positive feedback thing... like, the more comments you have, the more you'll get. people who read the existing ones have more text to respond to, so maybe they're more likely to post a new one.
do you notice kind of an ebb and flow with your friends list too? there will be like hours of dry spell, then suddenly i can't keep up! weird.
