Last night I was idly flipping channels (idle eyes watch the devil's television) and came across something that I've been hearing about, but I don't think I truly believed until I saw it with my own two eyes:

My Super Sweet Sixteen.

I'm sure I could rant ad infinitum about these spoiled, bratty, entitled kids, but I'm sure it's all been said before, so instead I'll wonder: These kids are from obviously very wealthy families, so how in the hell did these families manage to amass and maintain such wealth with such fucked-up financial priorities?

That said, it may still go on the Guilty Pleasure list, because it makes me feel deep in comparison. Wow, I really am shallow.

By marrying off their little princess to the scion of another rich family -- maybe even one who works for a living -- who can maintain the lifestyle to which she's accustomed. And will do the same for her daughters, thus perpetuating this kind of thing for another generation.

Looking for the silver lining ... at least some hard-working caterers, florists and manicurists are going to be able to send their kids to college because of these narcissistic twits and their overindulgent daddies.

I mean, if I were super-rich enough that I wouldn't miss it, I might throw a big-bucks party ... for the kid's college graduation. You gotta do something other than manage to live through the first sixteen years without overdosing on blow. But even if I rented a stadium, hired Coldplay, invited the 82nd Airborne and had an open bar, i don't think I could spend the kind of money these folks do.

I remember a study a couple of years ago that found that people who are incompetent in their jobs are also most likely to give themselves high marks for performance -- apparently, the same skills that allow people to do their jobs well also enable them to recognize competence. There must be a similar connection between acting like a completely self-absorbed twit and being completely unaware of how you come off. I can't imagine any other reason these people would allow cameras to follow them around.Yes, there's selective editing, but that only goes so far.

Believe it or not, Anderson Cooper TiVoes the show. Dunno if it reminds him of his priviliged teen years or if it's a nice break from the usual death and destruction for him.

If you watched the episode at 10:30 PM last night, you had the honor of seeing the sister of a boy that my friend [livejournal.com profile] rawee1 tutors. The boy is an angel according to her.

Ah, I see she's in Memphis, so that must be the one. Actually, I liked the two girls in that episode. They didn't come off bratty (a bit spoiled, but what do I expect on a show like this?), and they raised money for St. Jude's. Also, they were nice to each other. The ones on the episode before were all "If SHE ruins MY party, I'll make her life HELL!!"

My problem is that there is soooo much to rant about, I have no idea where to begin. So, I open and close my mouth a few times, shake my head, shake my fist and move on.

it's a real train wreck, isn't it? i seriously could not believe it when i first saw it. i kept making noises like "buh" and "guh" and "howcanshe...???" as jaded as i thought i was before, still i felt a last little sliver of innocence die inside me on that day.

though i really don't know how popular this show is, what makes me cry most of all is the thought of normal 16 year olds rushing home from school to tune in, and afterwards concluding that their lives are small or shitty or boring by comparison. is there such a thing as fiscal anorexia? :/

It's like being humble. As soon as you say you are - you're not.

A company I worked with last year sells high end plasma screen TV's. 60 inches and up. At one point a company had one ordered special without the wall mounting brackets because it was going in the back of a Barbie pink Hummer that was going to be a girls sweet 16 present....

What was the dude thinking? I'm not a father, but if I were, anything my teenaged daughter would be doing while watching a big TV in the back of a Hummer is something I wouldn't want done.

My personal favorite of the rality shows I'm never going to watch is "Who wants to be a SuperHero" on scifi. It just seems totally retarded.

I watch it too on occasion. The crazy thing is that this year everyone has to have an expensive performer AND a new car. What will these peoples weddings be like?

I thought my brother made it up. He didn't. He keeps threatening to send them a tape of his dog in a few years...I hope he does.(having her sixteenth birthday, of course!) On my sixteenth birthday, I had lunch out and a terrible head cold...almost everyone deserves a better one than I got, but out of proportion, much?
