A female friend of mine, a very liberal Democrat, from a solidly upper middle class family, kept a handgun in her car. (Which is legal under Louisiana law, which treats the car as an extension of the home.) She and her family simply felt it was unsafe for a young, 20-something woman to drive through some areas without some form of protection.
