This morning on the bus I saw a really cute guy, started checking him out, noticed his textbooks, realized exactly how young he was, and for the first time in my life felt like a dirty old woman.

There was one day when flickerandglow and I were still in California that we were driving around Berkeley and noticed this really hot guy on a skateboard and started lusting after him... and then we realized he was probably 10 years our junior. Yikes.

Because I've tried it before. Last year I was 24, he was 19. Sweet kid but ultimately I couldn't handle the (im)maturity of your average 19-year-old boy. The time before, I was 23, he was 20 and a master manipulator who took my virginity and broke my heart, then told me it was all my fault. No more dating guys born during the Reagan administration.

I've done it, too. When I worked at the bank, there was always this adorable boy who got on the bus I took home every day. I was totally checking him out, and thinking awful things, every day...up until the day he got on the bus wearing his "Bellarmine College Prep" sweatshirt, and someone else asked him if he went there. Oy. Not even legal. I felt so old and dirty. :)

Now that I'm doing the 24/19 thing, I find that I feel like The Amazing Lecherous Woman whenever I actually realize just how young The Boy is. Fortunately, he's more of a grown up than I am most of the time, so I don't notice so much. In my life, it's been the boys who are older than me who jerk me around and mess with my head. My newest rule is "no dating freakin' retards who mess with my head." I hope it will serve me well.

I think the difference in age gets much less important as you grow older. I mean, 23-to-20 is a much bigger difference than say, 33-to-30. I think it has more to do with the experiences, like if you've both graduated, gone to grad school or worked, etc.

Maybe he's not even slow. Maybe he had a nasty bought of chicken pox, followed by a nasty case of pnumonia, followed by a nasty case of mono that caused him to miss a few years of school. Though bright, he did not attend a school where taking AP classes or skipping ahead were possible. He had to remain at this school because of, um, his mother's job. So now he's at college, but a bit older and wiser than his classmates. Yeah, that's the ticket... I bet he also gives chocolate on the first date and reads Warren Ellis.

Fair enough but I'm not sure that has anything to do with the level of geek within the boy at all. Maybe you mean "poorly socialized" which I could see, but as a general rule I'm not sure geeks are any more emotionally distant than any other guy on the planet.
