So I went home last night with my box of Egyptian Plum Natural Instincts Exotic hair dye. (Picking this out probably looked quite bizarre. There I was in CVS sitting on the floor attempting to describe shades of red/purple to atomicnumber51. Actually, since she has DSL, she just pulled up the hair-dye websites and was able to follow along pretty well.) This time I had no intentions of dyeing my neck purple, so I slathered a metric fuckton of Vaseline on my neck.

Using "grown-up" hair dye is a hell of a lot easier than trying to figure out what to do with that little bottle of goth bait. They give you directions, they give you gloves, and it doesn't seem to stain so badly, though I sacrificed one towel for the cause.

So... I think it looks pretty good. It's really dark, but when the light catches it it looks really cool. And I think I can still get away with my pink lipstick -- actually, I think the pink lipgloss looks pretty good with it.

But right now it's greasy. Really greasy. I guess it's a combination of the super-moisturizers and all that Vaseline which got into my hair. I can't wash it till tonight. In the meantime I look like Snape's long-lost daughter. His long-lost beautiful smart Mary Sue daughter, of course...

I dye my hair regularly...First, dont use vaseline, it gets into your hair and the chemicals wont take...

what i do is, after i dye my hair and it is setting...i take makeup remover (cheap stuff that i get at cvs) and run that along the back of my neck at the hairline and anywhere else i got it (i have a bad habit of getting it on my face...arrrrgggg) to take most of it off before it sets on my skin. Then after i rinse my hair (before putting in the conditioner, i do a cold rinse (actually lukewarm...this sets the color and it tends to last longer) then do the conditioner. If you still have stain on your neck, use more makeup remover...and if it is a really tough stain i use a dab of fingernail polish remover, non acetone. i always put on lotion after i do this because it tends to dry out my skin.

ANyway, i know this is ALL unsolicited advice...but i hope it helps.

That is great advice.... I end up useing cold cream alot to when dying the hair but I neer thought about nail polish remover.. Heh. I didn't know that there was a benifit to the cold wash :)

Hate to tell you this...but you don't need to wash your hair for 48 hours. Especially with a red-based dye. The color needs to set. Trust me.

As you've learned, Vaseline bad. I just use the wet washcloth for during-color drips, and rubbing alcohol (works a little better than nail polish remover IME) to get rid of the post-color schmears.

Natural Instincts Egyptian Plum, hmm? I like my Clairol Ultress because it's dirt cheap, but the flip side is that the color doesn't last as long as the more expensive stuff (like Hydrience). I'll be interested to hear how the NI color stays. So far the best and brightest color I've done has been Clairol Hydrience Scarlet Shimmer, which was super bright red even over an old brownish color.

I use natural instincts (burmese ruby). I have used egyptian plum, but it's not dark enough or intense enough for me. When I was going for a pinkish/red cast, I would often follow up the application (dye, rinse, condition) with special effects ruby red, immediately, while hair is still wet (ray, from 'vox taught me to do it that way) then wait rinse and condition again.

I have never needed vaseline or anything when using *just* natural instincts. It washes right off skin with soap and water. You really do need it to set for 48 hours. Wear a beret tomorrow, or a bandana, or whatever. wear it in a ponytail, or a bun. Wrap it in a scarf. Suffer. Beauty is suffering, after all, ;) After that, make sure you always wash your hair in the coldest water that you can take. The colder the water, the least damage to your hair, the longer the dye stays in. It's not a matter of it not being as "intense", it's a matter of red dye just falls right the fuck out quicker than any other color other than blue. (it has the largest molecule of the natural colors, and has a hard time staying in, blue has a slightly larger molecule, and it's why blue hair tends to look more like green hair oh so very quickly.) I usually try to wait a good 3-4 days before shampooing after I dye. It's annoying, but as long as I keep it up and keep my face well washed, it's okay.

Do know that Natural Instincts has permanant dyes that match it;s colors. Look on the side of the box and it'll tell you what the color number/name is. If you decide to go permanant with that color, do know that a permanant color will look slightly different on you as it will more evenly coat and give less room for the natural highlights/lowlights in your hair. Your hair tends to mostly just be on color to begin with anyway, though, so it doesn't seem like it would do anything (I have a blond streak in the front of my hair, and using temp dyes like natural instincts means that it shows up intense there). Oooo, that reminds me, if you want it to be overall scary groovy intense, you can bleach before dying. :) :)

LOLOL.. someday I will log the horrendous story of when I colored my hair and it made clowns stop and look.. Have you seen the advertisement for Outback Steakhouse??? If you have.. her hair is mild next to what mine was.

Just be careful, when I did mine purple (Ferrier, looked really cool on my dark brown hair) It was still staining my towels almost two weeks later. Red-based colors just don't stick very well I guess. They look so cool on brown hair though! (I liked your pictures!)
