As you've learned, Vaseline bad. I just use the wet washcloth for during-color drips, and rubbing alcohol (works a little better than nail polish remover IME) to get rid of the post-color schmears.
Natural Instincts Egyptian Plum, hmm? I like my Clairol Ultress because it's dirt cheap, but the flip side is that the color doesn't last as long as the more expensive stuff (like Hydrience). I'll be interested to hear how the NI color stays. So far the best and brightest color I've done has been Clairol Hydrience Scarlet Shimmer, which was super bright red even over an old brownish color.
