Why can't people say what they mean and mean what they say?

Because we're afraid to hurt feelings.

I almost never know what I mean... at least not until after I've said it...

I know that feeling... it's particularly embarrassing when it strikes at work...

I do. Or at least, I certainly try to.

And that is one of the reasons I admire you.

Because that would make life far too easy.

I don't know. I expect people to do so. When they don't, I point this out to them. It seems that people who don't mean what they say tend not to get into conversations with me since I tend to hold them to their word...

I really do try to do this as well. There've been times when it was certainly problematic when I found out something that I said involved way more than I thought. Oops. But it's important to stick to it.

How can I ask others to say what they mean and mean what they say if I don't do it myself.

I don't know you well enough to tell if that is what you do but very idea of asking such a question wouldn't occur to someone who didn't do it already.
