From Newsweek's feature, The Legacy of Terri Schiavo:
"But in the Senate, lawmakers felt more comfortable with a bill narrowly tailored to Terri's caseāan approach that would help secure Democratic support. Only days before the scheduled withdrawal of her feeding tube on March 18, House and Senate negotiators still hadn't reached a compromise on a bill. [Jeb Bush's former adviser Ken] Connor blew up on a phone call with a senior GOP House member: 'What's the point of having Republicans in control?' he asked. 'The Republican base is going to hold the House leadership accountable.'"
If we're to the point where the only reason to be in politics is to push through your own agenda regardless of what's best for all the people in this nation, then we might as well give up and start over, because the American experiment is over.

Date: 2005-03-31 05:28 pm (UTC)My imense dislike for the Republicans started when the Republicans ground our nation to a halt just so they could oppose Clinton. They were more interested in blocking the opposition than working for the betterment of America.
Now, with Bush in the White House, any time the Democrats make a peep, the Republicans are all over them for "Playing Politics"... which is ALL the Republicans were doing during the Clinton years.
I have read about the extent the Republicans have gone to use misinformation and lies to bring down the Democrats...
and in my mind, the Republican party is much more interested in the Republican party over the good of America... and I watch the news and am horrified at how OBVIOUS this is... and so many don't seem to get it.
ARRRRGH.

Date: 2005-03-31 05:50 pm (UTC)I do not believe the Democrats have done anything so extreme, though I believe that's due to "Democrats are too dumb to get their shit together" rather that "Democrats are ethical."
Yes, both parties are bad. But I'm very tired of the "well look what the Democrats did" excuse being used to justify very unethical behavior on the part of Republicans. If the Republicans were as moral as they insist they are, they would not resort to this sort of bait-and-switch.

Date: 2005-03-31 05:57 pm (UTC)These are my feelings also. Such fucking hypocrites!! At the end of Monicagate it was like, 65% of Americans polled who said "Geez I wish they'd just get on with the business of fucking running the country." But y'know what, they never actually did. Just relentless harping about Oval Office trysts and perjury and subplots and intrigue and and and.
And formerly, reasonable people were trying to figure out who was responsible for us selling guns to our enemy, Iran, and giving the money to a bunch of terrorists, the Contras. But as soon as Bush's Daddy took office, he blanket-pardoned EVERYONE who'd ever worked for Reagan. What an AAAAAASSSS-HOOOOOLE!!!!

Date: 2005-03-31 06:52 pm (UTC)And will someone please tell me what is so awful about socialism? Without quoting Ayn Rand, that is; I've no interest in hearing yet more parroting of her so-called "philosophy", being that it's a naked justification for avarice and immoral behavior.

Date: 2005-03-31 06:04 pm (UTC)The Democrats have their problems... and I agree with many who say that the Democrats have lost their spine...
but please.
The Republicans KNEW that Clinton wasn't involved in Whitewater... that there was no real crime... but they knew if they spent LOTS of texpayer money and created the case it would undermine Clinton's credibility and become an icon they can point at for the next Scandal.
I watched the Republicans during 8 years of Clinton... and they just railed against him with attack after attack. Do you remember when Clinton called for action against Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban?? Remember the Republicans accusing Clinton of trumping up Bin Laden into some kind of national threat just to cover up for the Monica thing? Do you remember the Republicans putting 200 FBI agents on the Monica thing... pulling them off more important duties??
They were more interested in catching Clinton in a sex scandal then helping protect America.
Remember the Bush administration saying it's Clinton's fault for 9/11?
Do you remember all the warnings that were made during the Reagan years about the long term results of his policies??
Look! THEY'RE HAPPENING!!
Democrats aren't saints, but the behavior of the Republicans since Reagan...and especially during the Clinton years have made me so completely hate the Republican party and view them as the worst enemy America faces... and that isn't just because I suddenly decided one day to not like Republicans. I've just been paying attention.
To try to pretend that the Republicans and Democrats are playing the same game is just flat out ignorance.
My anger at the Republicans makes it very hard for me to even debate the point, because when I watch the shit they pull each week... it sickens me. Sickens me to the core.
I gotta stop here.
Yup.
