Tonight I went to the candlelight vigil on the quad at Emory.

I'm not sure what I was expecting; both my professor and I had been dismayed at the seeming lack of concern of the Emory students. But there were people EVERYWHERE. Some of my colleagues from the English department showed up. People got up and talked about their feelings. At least two of them reminded people not to judge based on ethnicity.

Then we lit the little white candles (which we kept having to relight because of the breeze) and sang "God Bless the USA." Everyone held their candles way up at the end. It was nothing short of moving.

And people stayed. We sang "This Little Light of Mine" and "Amazing Grace" and "God Bless America" and finally "The Star-Spangled Banner." And even then it wasn't over. We pledged allegiance to the American flag at half-mast and then people took their still-burning candles and arranged them at the base of the flag. I nearly cried yet again.

I've bitched about Emory students before and I'm sure I will again, but they've got it where it counts.
