Why does it matter? It still happens.

It doesn't matter. That's why it's an idle poll! ;)

Since I was just watching an episode of Sex and the City last night that addresed this same question, I am inclined to say:

Bullshit.

But in some cases, it's the only thing that makes sense. Otherwise, you could drive yourself crazy with "what-if's".

I kind of have to believe in karma to keep myself from going crazy sometimes...

I dont' really believe in fate.

I also think this general thinking on things is missing the point.

I don't think things happen for a reason, I think you find reason in things that happen.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense. :)

Of course all things happen for a reason. That's cause-and-effect.

Now, I never said the reason was meaningful....

No, but reason you give it afterwards is entirely up to you. :-) Make the best of it.

Yes, but human beings are endowed with the gift of free will. Most exercise their free will by choosing to disavow any knowledge of reason.

Consequently, Homo sapiens sapiens is a misnomer by two "sapiens." ;-)

Clarification

I assume that most people who voted yes did so because they think there is some kind of fate or god or other mumbo jumbo that makes things 'happen for a reason.'

Just so you know, I'm a determinist/materialist. In my view, everything happens for a reason, but the reason is physics.

Thanks to the online handicap of no non-verbal indicators, I can't tell if your making fun of me or not.

I was agreeing, not making fun.

I was in particularly terse mood when I replied.
