that's easy. you work with the public. you work in an education system, which therefor means you work with the most uneducated of them all...at least as far as it comes with common sense and manners!
I honestly ask myself this almost every day. =( *hugs* It seems I've gone from "nice" to "angry." I have to hope that our nice person is still locked away somewhere.... =/
Wow, that makes a lot of sense. Problem is, the repressed anger doesn't seem to hit the correct target usually, but I guess that would be why it's repressed in the first place. :P
I've been having that same issue - my only two emotions lately seem to be anger and hurt. *hugs* I hope that you feel less angry soon. I know that it's a pretty sickening feeling.
My therapist (uh-oh, I'm going to start channeling Tina, if this keeps up!) also says that hurt and depression are what happen when we don't heed our anger, which is our warning system that we're being harmed. Sounds like maybe you aren't letting yourself be angry as much as you should.
It's okay to stand up for yourself. You're not going to break anyone; human beings are remarkably resilient.
You know, I knew there was something sinister about you the moment you started looking at Cinnamon as though he'd look good over linguini in a white wine sauce.
Someone said in a comment this weekend that it's impossible to be really "sweet" after the age of 15 without some major personality flaws or without getting chopped to bits in the process. I think the same may apply to being "nice".
Okay, I came in late to the party and now everyone's already given you great advice in this thread.
The fact that Clifton Road isn't littered with the corpses of law school students and professors should be proof enough that you're nice -- it's hard NOT to strangle them!
well...

But my therapist says depression is all about repressed anger.
And what happens when you stop repressing all that anger?
It doesn't mean you stop being a nice person. It just means you won't put up with being shat upon anymnore. :-)

Yeah, you're right. Everybody's got secrets. For example, I'll never tell anyone about my childhood crush on Peter Cushing. Damn!
I didn't mean that, everybody. That was a joke.

You only have one deep dark secret??!?
What happened to all the others...?

You've chosen to parcel out your niceness and sweetness in fewer but larger parcels.
For those who have suffered through the arduous process and earned your trust and love, they get your niceness and gentleness.
Everyone else has to earn it.
