In life, I guess it's important to refine your goals as you get older.

Elementary School Goal: Become a great actress. Or a cartoonist.

Middle School Goal: Become the first woman president and marry David Johnson. (Cute guy. Totally uninterested.)

High School Goal: Become a great writer.

College Goal: Become a brilliant professor. Get married, have children.

Grad School Goal: Ummm... not die?

Post-Grad School Goal: Get a master's of library science. Get married, have children.

New Goal: Have twenty cats.

No, really, I'm serious. I love kitties, and I think a house full of kitties will make me happy. Screw all that other stuff. I want kitties.

And getting to the twenty cats will give me goals. Like, if I want to have twenty cats I'm going to have to have money. Y'know, for vet bills and cat food and kitty treats. And a nice big house, because they're going to be indoor kitties. Yeah. I'll need a better job.

I have friends who named their cats Cat, Cat Too (or Two, I'm not sure which), called Tooie, and Tertius ('cause they were getting pretentious, I guess). I can't wait to see what they do with their next cat.

They follow patterns with dogs, too. Their first dog was named Smeagol. She came to an untimely end and her successor is named Deagol.

It's funny how many of my goals have solidified and come true in the past 5-6 years since I've known my wife. Got married, will have kids in the next couple of years, got a job in a library, ALMOST have my master's degree in library science (one more week!), got a couple of kitties...

I did have to give up a few goals along the way, like becoming a writer (but I can always do that in my free time once I'm out of school!).

You do know that cats do not naturally hang out in groups of twenty? They don't really like it. About 5 or so is your upper limit. And we're talking big big house.

You could just start helping down at your local animal shelter, that'd be like having twenty cats. Except, you'd have puppies too.

oh trust me, i know what you mean. we're in a three-story house, not including basement, and we have SIX CATS. five of them are altered males. the female is actually the most polite one. don't ever let anybody tell you that neutering a tom means he'll never mark. and these guys don't just mark. they do the other thing too. yes, outside the box.

i once thought i wanted to be a little old lady someday in a big house with lots of cats. now i think i'd settle for two or three. preferably from the same litter so they'd like each other. although that doesn't always work either.

Her name is "Lieutenant". The one before that was "Captain".
