I was just on the phone with Mom and mentioned tonight's impending departure of a cast member from Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

Mom: Is that who it is? I saw the promo where the car blew up and I said "Please don't let it be Munch, I don't know if Kelly can handle it right now."

Heee!! That's a good story. In those days, Law and Order had so little about the characters' personal lives that Jill Henessey didn't even realize Jack and Claire had a thing going. It was almost all in implication (there's one episode which ends with Adam saying something about "you never really know who you might be sleeping with" and Jack and Claire kinda look at each other). In the death penalty episode (the one where Claire got killed), Claire went to the bar to pick up Jack but he was already gone, which is why she was there to find Lennie. The next season made it clear that they had been involved and Jack took her loss very hard, as Jamie noted.

Have you gotten to see Homicide yet? Claire also had a pretty intense flirtation with Tim Bayliss. That was also the crossover where we learned that Briscoe had had a fling with one of Munch's ex-wives (rattling Munch so hard that he lost like three hundred bucks playing pool with Briscoe). Jerry Orbach was thrilled with the subplot, which was courtesy of the Homicide writers. He reportedly said "Hey! My character had sex!!"

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Okay. I guess I just never put two and two together that Claire had gone to the bar to pick up Jack. It's such a powerful episode it's no wonder I missed a few things. I just loved the scene with Claire and her father, and particularly how they didn't reveal who he was until the end of their conversation. Very cool.

I did indeed see the episode where Munch learns that Lenny had a fling with his ex-wife--very excellent. I keep waiting for one of these channels to start showing Homicide reruns so I can get down with all things Homicide...

*crosses fingers*

Well, there's always hoping -- the Homicide parts of the Law and Order crossovers got huge ratings, higher than even the Law and Order parts. They were like the highest-rated basic cable dramas that week. See if Blockbuster or Netflix has the DVDs for rental!
