There's a musical genre that's currently fascinating me: Bizarro-world remakes of gangsta rap standards.

Granted, I don't know how big this genre is. In fact, I only know of two: Dynamite Hack doing "Boyz in the Hood" and the Gourds' version of "Gin and Juice."

I've been trying to figure out if the Dynamite Hack version of "Boyz in the Hood" is actually ironic or if I've just been smoking out of the Alanis Morrisette crackpipe (makes you misuse terms like "ironic"). I think it might be some kind of comment on suburban kids who want to be gangstas, or something like that. It sounds really mellow and acoustic.

Whereas the Gourds' version of "Gin and Juice" is just fucked up. You listen to it and all you can think about is how much rednecks and gangsta rappers have in common. I think [livejournal.com profile] tenn_crichton called it "the Grundy County theme song." [livejournal.com profile] gamgee described the sound as "Hootie and the Snoopfish." I mean, it's got mandolins. Motherfucker. You just have to hear it to believe it.

I love the Dynamite Hack version of Boyz in da Hood. It rocks. But I don't think this awesomeness-of-remakes-phenomenon is limited to gangsta rap. Try downloading The Folksmen's version of Start Me Up (from the Chris Guest movie A MIGHTY WIND). FUN-NEEEE. :)

oooooh!!!!

I have to hear "Gin and Juice" my dad lives in Grundy County! Boyz in the Hood cracks me up every time I hear it, one radio station here plays it occasionally. I also have a CD with The Connells doing a cover of "Insane in the Brain." It's quite disturbing....

If you have kazaa, you can download it. This version is listed under three different names on kazaa. So far, we have seen it listed as being performed by the Barenaked Ladies, Dynamite Hack and by Phish.

I've been tryinng to hunt down what I now know is Dynamite Hack's cover of "Boyz" for ages. I remember a trip to Tampa, I was w/my friend Jerri, and she gets a call on her cell while driving, a friend of hers screaming to put it on some station and tell her who does this song... we didn't know, and nearly got sideswpiued... kinda been stuck in my head ever since. Anyway, I ran a google search, and here was your journal post; thanks for being wicked-bad enough to post this, and to have the kind of friends who'd use Eddie Izzard for their pic. You've gotta be alright. Thanks again, babe.

Luv On Ya,
