Mascara

I need to glam up my look, methinks, and mascara would help. The problem is, I am hapless with mascara. On me, it clumps, it flakes, it leaves raccoon ringlets under my eyes. (Those of you who have seen me react to shiny things know that I am in fact part raccoon, but that's not the point.) So recommend me a good, cheap, can't-screw-it-up mascara. And while you're at it:

anything max factor. I like the 2000 calorie. Or the maybelline in the pink and green tube is ALWAYS a good choice.

I agree, but get the waterproof kind. I always end up blinking it down my face. :)

[identity profile] tropiquena.livejournal.com 2003-06-10 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
maybelline great lash! :) go for waterproof and you'll be set!

(and pssst: do you use an eyelash curler? if you don't, get on it! then you can use way less mascara and avoid clumpies! :D)

I swear by New York Color makeup. Its cheap and you can get it at Walgreens or the grocery store!

Tip: Put foundation under your eyes and then you'll have less "raccoon" rings. Also try not to rub your eyes during the day!

if all else fails, clear mascara works to accentuate but won't leave marks.

As for the hair: HIGHLIGHTS AND LAYERS! I wish you lived closer so I could take you to my best friend. She's a hair stylist and the only person in the world I trust with my hair!

I use Avon...all their stuff is good. I can't remember the particular mascara I've got now, but it doesn't give me any problems as far as running.

I used to use clear mascara and an eyelash curler, before I found the Avon stuff.

I loooove

Mary Kay's Endless Performance. Very nice. Makes my lashes look fuller and just pops my eyes out. No smudging. Even when I cry. (Not as crazy about the waterproof mascara, however.)

I swear I am not saying this because I sell it, either. I really do like the mascara very much.

As for the hair, I went short and am letting my hair grow long so I tend to lean that way in advice right now but . . . I also color my hair and color can be fun.

Maybelline Great Lash.

If that doesn't work...check out MAC. It is a little more money but still reasonably prices compared to say...Chanel or something.

I use Lancome myself but I am a total makeup whore.

I vote for Almay. look for one with a narrow brush, and be careful not to blink while you apply it. also, when you powder your face, make sure you do your eyes, especially underneath, then if there are any flakes they don't get stuck and create that wonderful raccoon look.

[identity profile] fairylogic.livejournal.com 2003-06-10 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear by Almay Amazing Lash. I''ve tried a lot of others, but it works the best on me - no clumps, pretty lashes, and it doesn't flake into my eyes when I'm dealing with nasty allergies. The waterproof formula is also good if you need that sort of thing.

Best of luck and may you have gaggles of cute boys to bat your newly painted lashes at.

I would not hack and slash it. Only hack and slash when you're feeling settled, never do it when you're emotional, because that's when people regret new, impulsive hairdos. Do something more subtle, but fun. Playing with highlights and layers like someone else suggested sounds good.

[identity profile] the-missy.livejournal.com 2003-06-10 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a very good point. However, my own hack-and-slash was a necessary step after a very unfortunate hair product mishap (let's just say you shouldn't use a straightener on permed and lightened hair). But now that I'm short, I keep cutting shorter, and I like it more every time.

But definitely, don't jump into a hack in times of turmoil.

I use L'Oreal Lash Out. I like thick, long lashes, and it gives me that. But I think the real trick with mascara is not which product you use but how you use it. Bear with me here. If you have been pumping up and down to get more mascara on your wand, not only are you not really adding anything to the wand you're also encouraging nasty bacteria to grow up in there. Bad. Instead, unscrew the wand but leave it in the, uh, thingy and rotate the wand around in circles. That will get much more goop on the wand. Then the only trick is applying it to your lashes. Me, personally, I start at the outside and work my way in. The thing is, I think this lends itself entirely to personal preference.

Maybelline great lash (the one in the pink and green tube? whatever that one's called anyway, that's the one) is always perfect and cheap.

Never pull the wand in and out, simply pull the wand out then press a lintless cloth (good TP works) against it to get rid of the excess (you have to throw away mascara every 3 months anyway, don't worry about wasting it). Slowly and firmly comb eyelashs *ONCE* with wand. wait 3-5 seconds for it to dry. apply again and wait between applications until you have coated all lashes, combing always away from the eye and outwards. Never apply more than 4 coats. use eyelash/eyebrow comb to carefully remove any clumps if there are any. curl with eyelash curler.

Three Foot Fro.

My recommendation

[identity profile] printemps.livejournal.com 2003-06-10 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Avon Waterproof Mascara. It doesn't give me raccoon eyes or flake or do anything weird, and when I put in eyedrops it doesn't come off either. However, it comes off very easily with a cotton ball and some makeup remover, which I like. I recommend it heartily.

[identity profile] mrswarkie.livejournal.com 2003-06-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I use Maybelline - either Great Lash or Full and Soft, and I always curl my lashes, because it makes my eyes look bigger.

Or, do what I did this time, and get your hairdresser to dye your lashes for you - saves putting on mascara every morning!

[identity profile] mschristine.livejournal.com 2003-06-11 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
before applying wipe the mascara wand with a tissue when it's new then the extra goop won'tstick to your lashes and minimize the chances of running and stuff, and curl them it does make a diffrence.
