bizarre dreams
May. 21st, 2003 11:20 amI suppose it's kind of ironic for someone who reads tarot cards and is fascinated by the unseen, but I've never really been one of the camp that believes dreams necessarily mean something. I've always just figured dreams are my brain's way of rearranging the muddledness that is my thought processes so it'll have something to do while my body recharges. In fact, recently I prayed for some kind of sign in a dream, and ended up dreaming about Harry Potter and Marie Antoinette, which makes no sense to me. But I digress. Anyway, I rarely remember my dreams long enough to make any sense out of them. A couple of times I have realized I was dreaming, which once was kinda cool, and the other time was just weird, because in my dream I really wanted to sleep, and once I understood it was a dream I could have conked out in my dream, but instead I kept walking even though I was exhausted.
Like most people, I do have a few recurring dream themes. My least favorite is the band dream. In this dream, for some reason I have to go back to high school marching band, usually band camp. I was really fucking sick of band by the time I graduated but was too fucking stubborn to quit. (And no, I never did that with my clarinet.)
But the most frequent dream subject that I can think of is the Titanic. For those of you who don't know, the Titanic is a lifelong obsession for me. From the time I was a small child, I've been fascinated by it. You couldn't write a story that good -- remember the Onion headline, "World's Largest Metaphor Hits Iceberg and Sinks"? The first time I saw the movie (and yes, I do like the movie, don't try to make me feel like a Philistine over it), I barely paid attention to the movie itself because I was too busy nitpicking. Once in the Titanic exhibit (even though I disagree with the salvage efforts, I've been more than once, once with a friend and once with my mom), an actress playing one of the survivors was flustered to discover I knew more about her character than she did. But once again I digress. (Digressions are fun aren't they?)
So yes, the Titanic. I dream of the Titanic often. Inevitably it sinks. Once it was even salvaged, made seaworthy, and hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank a second time. Sometimes I'm on board, other times I'm watching from a distance.
I dreamed about the Titanic again last night. This time it had sunk in a mountain lake, of all places. I was there to explore the wreckage, I think. I have no idea what this could mean.
I don't think I've ever gone down with the ship though.
