Oh, I guess that joke doesn't go over well if you haven't read that book. ;)
There's a children's book called "are you my mother" which tells the story of a little birdie who hatches while his mother is out gathering food. He walks around look for her and comes across a crane (not the bird the machine) and asks "Are you my mother?" and the crane makes a loud noise. The little birdie says, "You are not my mother! You are a snort!"
