Here in Georgia they've been talking a lot about Martha Burke, Hootie Johnson, and whether the Masters should admit women.

Well, I think Hootie Johnson is a cranky old coot and the Masters should join the twenty-first century and admit women already. But I have to admit, when I think about all the issues of concern to women today, I understand why fewer and fewer women self-identify as feminists. We used to talk about this in my women's studies classes as a sort of ivory-tower effect: the feminist spokespeople making most of their noise over things which are not necessarily of interest to most women. As far as I'm concerned, Hootie can keep his boys' club if we can have equal pay for equal work, affordable child care, and a myriad of other things that I just think are of far more importance to the average woman than joining a club that only filthy rich people can afford to join anyway.

So, you you think Hootie should just go blow fish, or something?

(sorry, couldn't resist)

I'm not opposed to the idea of private clubs. But everyone seems to agree that it's wrong to have a club that doesn't allow African-Americans or other ethnic groups, so why is it different for women?

What do they do at this men's only golf club that women can't see--pee on the green??

Honestly, whenever I see "Men Only" clubs, as far as I'm concerned its a chance for men to act like little boys.

However, I do think that all of the things you stated--equal pay, health care, affordable child care, etc--are much more important in the greater scheme of things.

Ah, but when feminists start talking about equal pay for equal work and affordable child care, the media starts snoring. There's the rub.

Didnt one of the players let a 12-year old girl attempt a 20 foot putt on one of the greens during the tournament? :) The person who told me that said she sunk it too!

If its true that the player did this, I think its a pretty funny way to thumb their nose at the Club officials.

Funny thing is, most of us who live close enough for it to matter really don't give a damn. All I experienced from locals in this regard was a general rolling of the eyes. We also host an LPGA Tournament at Mt. Vintage. So its not like there isn't a venue.
Let the boys have thier club.

Amen, sister. I just finished Betty Friedan's auto (which was actually really eye-opening about the movement - she started NOW and NARAL). And she was very upset about some people trying to make the movement 'radical chic' instead of mainstream. It really has alienated a lot of women to have the focuses they do now.

As she said, forget take back the night. We'll work on that after we take back the day.
