Who's heard the new Beastie Boys song (available at http://www.beastieboys.com/)? I've heard it once and I want to hear it again (not that I expect it to get much airplay, though I'd love to be wrong).

Now there's an amazing story. To start out with music that many have called misogynist and end up speaking out on everything from Free Tibet to making concerts safe for women, and now taking a position that could potentially be very unpopular -- I am totally impressed with them, and have been for some time.

And the sad(dest) thing about that is that it's totally unnecessary. Take for example Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movies. They don't resemble the usual TV movies -- tawdry tales of scantily-clad women in jeopardy (why Lifetime thinks I as a woman want to watch other women being stalked and raped for entertainment I'll never understand) -- in any way; they're high-quality, with excellent acting and writing, and are frequently based on acclaimed novels. Those movies often get huge ratings. Hell, look at the way teen girls are going nuts over Avril Lavigne. I'm not saying she's a musical genius or anything, but she plays her own instruments, writes her own songs, and portrays herself as something more than a sex bomb. After being force-fed Britney and Christina for years, they're going nuts over something real. And think of how many derivative things have failed -- gross-out comedies, all those ripoffs of Friends a few years ago. The American public is smarter than the media realizes; they don't want to give us the credit.
