I was just telling [livejournal.com profile] weaklikekitten that Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. When I was a kid of course I liked Christmas better, and maybe I still do, but it hit me in my teen years that I loved Thanksgiving -- no stress, just time to hang out with family, bond with Mom, and enjoy the excitement of the season just beginning.

Then I realized: Gee, can you tell I'm a little piggy? My favorite holiday is the food one.

I think just about everyone holds thanksgiving as a favorite (unless there's trauma involved, things like exploding turkeys or cranberry salmonella...)

Hold up here:

everyone who loves Thanksgiving the best probably does not do the cooking, coordinating and/or hosting for all the family members who show up. I too loved Thanksgiving third best (behind St Valentine's day and Halloween) until I helped my mom host the bia-annual Thanksgiving family reunion at HER house.

As wonderful as it was to be with extended family, and as much as I love to chef for large crowds and EVEN despite the fact that each family member contributed some culinary delight, I have revised my opinion:

Thanksgiving is great so long as someone else is doing the work.

Excellent point. I realized something was mildly wrong as I was typing, but ignored it...

I think you're exactly right about why Thanksgiving is good - it's not the food so much as the lack of stress. There's still a whole month to deal with the holidays. :)

You're not alone, there are a lot of peeps who love Thanksgiving (I'm guilty here too ^.^). It's a time to reflect on what "one" has to be thankful for. Not to get too historical, but many gathering where accompanied with eating, so we associate major holidays with food but really what holiday isn't.

This doesn't make anyone look like a piggy, just shows that we as a society like to enjoy ourselves.

Personally, my all-time favourite holiday is Halloween - sure one might not say it's a "true" holiday, but hey who can resist free candy (especially after checking out my children's loot (they don't want) after they've gone to bed *l*)
