I consider it one of my personal missions to stand up to people who pull inconsiderate shit like going through the express lane with obviously more than the alloted items, talking on a cell phone in theaters, etc. Or barring that, at least point out that they're assholes. My mom thinks I'm getting bitchy. [livejournal.com profile] metaphorge thinks I'm taking things too personally. Lots of people apparently think I'm the queen of whining. And to some degree, I guess they're all probably right. But I just think I'm doing my duty.

Generally, I try to be as non-confrontational as possible, because the stress it creates eventually outweighs the initial adrenalin high brought on by speaking up. But on "special" occasions the behavior of self-absorbed assholes cries out for action. I am especially peeved by people who do not monitor their children in stores and public places, and people who refuse to remove noisy, misbehaved children from theaters and performance spaces.

At what point do you confront violators of the "10 items of less" law? 11 items? 15? What do you say to them?

You've got a point about the adrenaline not being worth it...

I guess confrontation depends on how heinous it is, how busy it is, and how bad a mood I'm in. Yeah, it's arbitrary. I'm not an especially good moral arbiter, but I'm all we've got.

Great post, btw! Went in my memories.
