As in, I need one.

If grad school is indeed not for me, I need to figure out what comes next.

I'm not leaving yet, so I have some time to think. What am I good at?

-- teaching? (my mother reacted very badly tonight when I thought out loud about teaching high school)
-- retail? (a hundred-thousand dollar education for this?)
-- editing? publishing? (hard to find jobs)
-- writing? (really hard to find jobs)
-- prostitution? (just kidding, really)

I guess what I'm trying to say is, does anyone want to hire me to lounge around in a bathrobe and eat bonbons? Kinda like an overgrown Persian cat.

What kind of jobs have you worked in the past? Experience is everything (mostly). Many folks (myself included) try a number of things before they figure out what they want to do. As someone with too much schooling, let me say that there is so little relevance between academics and the real world--grad school (except professional schools like law & medicine) do little to prepare you for it. Be prepared to try new things--it's scary, but it's an enriching adventure.

My mother was overjoyed at the thought of my teaching high school. (SOPHOCLES questions his mother's motives. and give a light faint-hearted chuckle.)

You do not want to work retail. Retail is evil. Retail is the soul killer. Retail is the huge black death that looms over you.

eh.. maybe you'd like it better than I did.

Depends on where you'd be teaching. If it were in a public high school in Tennessee, unless it were Oak Ridge, I'd come find you and drag you off to a mental hospital. (Actually, in the current climate, I'd do that if it were Oak Ridge.)

Have you tried any of these strong interest survey-type tests that many college counseling centers have? I remember taking it, and my top two or three things were all things I seemed well-suited for: journalist (which I sorta am), clergy (I could be a UU minister), and book editor.

*grin* She's going to shoot me for this but....that would make sense.

But he is right. Try one of the 'What am I good at?'
