This morning I rolled out of bed and managed to exercise for ten minutes on my landlady's equipment. For a day, that's pathetic. For me, that's a start.

The diet (well, not a diet per se -- more like "healthy changes in eating habits") is off to an okay start. I've had hardly any Coke this week, and I've been drinking a lot of no-calorie fruit-flavored water -- at least a liter, two liters some days. I ate a lot last night at trivia, but mostly I've been trying for healthy smaller-portioned stuff like Lean Cuisine and more veggies.

It's really tough for me. For those of you who've never seen me eat, I eat like a horse. Eating is one of my great pleasures in life. But I want to get back to a healthy weight. I see myself in the mirror and I don't like it. Not to mention I have no energy. So I'm trying. We'll see how I do.

Good luck! I've been trying to do the healthy-eating thing lately, but this past week has been rough.

Giving up Coke was one of the hardest things for me. I wish I didn't have such a neurotic aversion to artificial sweetners so I could switch to diet sodas.

I need to start exercising though. Ten minutes on an exercise machine is not a bad start -- that's all I could manage the last time I tried an elliptical.

Aversion to artificial sweeteners is not neurotic. I have never put NutraSweet/aspartame into my body in my life, and will never do so. It is an inherently unstable substance which should never have been approved for human consumption. My mother is one of thousands of victims of MS-like neurological disorders whose illness may very well be attributable to heavy consumption of diet soft drinks and other products containing aspartame.

So sorry to hear about your mother's experience...

I started avoiding artifical sweeteners when my mother realized that they triggered her debilitating migraines, People always look at me strangely when I say I don't drink diet soda -- it's amazing how accepted aspartame is in this country.
