Being aware of your eating habits and patterns is the best step you can make.
In Weight Watchers we have a week where we talk about "what kind" of eater you are. A lot of people are "volume" eaters (me included), which means that you like to feel full and satiated.
The key to that is filling up on stuff that's good for you. So, whole grain, low fat stuff. Veggies, quality protein (low in fat: fish, legumes).
For me, being aware of what I eat has been the biggest thing. I never used to pay attention to what I was eating--even to the point where I didn't always take the time to appreciate and enjoy the taste. Because I love eating, and good food.
