There was a phone ringing in the library at the reference desk for like five minutes. The reference staff is away, and I am decidedly not reference staff, but I finally picked it up for the purpose of saying "they ain't here, biyatch!!" (or the polite version of that)

When I picked it up, I got a dial tone. Weird.

When I was a kiddie, that was an early phone-freaking thing. You could pick up a phone and put in a code and it would ring until someone would answer and then it would be nothing but a dial tone. :-)
