Interestingly, a really large number have unhappy endings. I think there's really something to the resonance of the lost love idea... I mean, Shakespeare wrote lots of happy endings, but no one mentions those couples. It's always Romeo and Juliet instead. (Though a lot of the happy couples [i.e., Beatrice and Benedick] seemed more believable to me than Romeo and Juliet, but I digress...)

Still, I'm happy to see some favorites of mine on here... Casablanca, The Princess Bride, Beauty and the Beast, Titanic (yes, I liked Titanic, and I'm not afraid to admit it ;) ).

The MotherFucking Bridges of MotherFucking Madison County made the list? What the fuck is the AFI smoking?

And, um, much as Double Indemnity may be one of my all-time favorite movies, it really doesn't belong on this list.

And where the hell is There's Something About Mary? Seriously.

On the plus side, I was happy to see that The Shop Around the Corner was here, and that You've Got Mail wasn't (now if only Sleepless in Seattle had been excluded as well).

As AFI lists go, it's better than most, I guess.

You've Got Mail is the only movie I've seen in a theater that I've almost walked out of. I'll rant on that next, I think...

You know, when I was forced to read Romeo & Juliet in 9th grade, I was 13. Prime "oh, how romantic!" age, yes? Nope. I thought "what a couple of idiots." I still do. I don't find that story romantic at all.

When Harry Met Sally is one I like. And I love The Princess Bride, but I see it as more of a silly fairy tale than a love story. Because I couldn't see anyone who wasn't terribly shallow loving Buttercup, as bitchy as she was.

I haven't seen the vast majority of the movies listed. And half the ones I have seen, I can barely remember.

Romance Flicks

I've always thought of Romeo and Juliet as less about "love" or "romance" and more about society. Romeo and Juliet didn't kill themselves to be together - they committed suicide because their lives sucked already, and their only escape from the brutal realities of their lives was each other. Their relationship was totally adolescent, unrealistic and I find everything about that play to be melodramatic. It's one of Shakespeare's worst.

I've never really cared for Romeo and Juliet . I like Hamlet...

As for romance flicks, I enjoy Amelie , Le Double Vie de Veronique, Frankie and Johnny , The Remains of the Day, Music From Another Room and Great Expectations ( the modern version with Gwyneth Paltrow)
