My Vill kitty was shyyyyyyyyyy. Supershy. For years. It was a similar situation - she'd wandered up on somebody's porch pregnant, had kittens, and they'd found homes for all the kittens but not for her. By the time I adopted her, she had recovered from the kittens and been spayed, and her spay was totally healed.
It took a long time for her not to be terrified of every little thing. I'm still usually the only one who ever sees her. But (don't tell the others) she's my favorite.
