How the hell do you think they got the idea for tampons?

Not sure. But they were popularized by wandering troupes of minstrels.

OMG!

I have no idea. However, my friend [livejournal.com profile] painkiller directed me to this site (http://www.tamponart.com).

once one tries stuffing soft, cottony-like substancesin one's undergarments, the idea naturally occurs to stuff said soft stuff into one's body.

You never made a tampon with toilet paper or cotton or whatever?

it's one of those things that i couldn't give you a source for, but was so odd it stuck in my head.

along the same vein, courtesans used to use spider webs (and douching of course) for contraceptives.

LOL!!!

I haven't tried this yet myself, but I've heard a much healthier (and cheaper) alternative is a natural sea sponge. You can buy them in little pads that you can cut to whatever size is most comfortable for you, and one can last a long time if you clean it regularly.

It's like...

It's like in those cartoons, when there is water on the other side of the otherwise water-tight fence, and a little plug bursts out and hits charactar "A" in the head, and he looks quizzically at it and just happens to have a plug like mechanism with which to stick in it. At this point the parallel begins to break down, as other holes pop open, and the charachter doesn't have any more plugs (toes and fingers are often used it seems) and so the fence falls down and water comes tidal wave style to fill the land.

Yup.
