From [livejournal.com profile] scarcrest comes the disturbing news that Ed Brubaker is signing an exclusive contract with Marvel.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Marvel's already snatched away Michael Lark, and now Brubaker? What the hell? Do they have it in for Gotham Central, The Greatest Comic on the Market Except for Possibly Fables (and Barry Ween if Judd Ever Gets Around to it), or something? Is there even any Marvel stuff suited to Brubaker's style? Please don't tell me they're going to have him writing Ultimately Astonishingly Sell-Out X-Men or some such shit. Frankly, I'm relieved I haven't been reading any Marvel lately (aside from the very occasional She-Hulk or Supreme Power) because I don't want my money going to fund this murder.

I shall be forced to console myself with the knowledge, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] ardentdelerium, that Superman Is a Dick. (Just trust me. Click that link.)

Alias is the only thing that exists currently in the Marvel U. that would not be a waste of his talents. If Bendis continues on X-men. Of course he could be coming on to ass rape Chuck Austen, or buy Cleremont a ticket to at least 1991. I was excited about exclusivedeals at first, but now... I guess if your editorial staff is a bunch of pussies that can't stand up to the shareholders, then you'll never have more than a few titles/characters here & there that are worth a damn. Still stealing from a competing pimps stable ain't no good if you can't take care of your own stock.

SuperMan is indeed a dick.

I realize those covers were designed to be suspenseful, to make you wonder why such a good guy would act that way...well, fuck that.

He's a dick.

Granted that I haven't been reading comics for a few years, but I can't remember the last Marvel book that I actually liked... and I grew up loving Spider-Man and the X-Men. *shrug*

You DID remind me, however, that the DC rep gave me the first FABLES trade at ALA in Boston. I need to get around to reading it one of these days.

You say this like the American comics market isn't headed on a downward spiral as it gets more and more self-referential and more and more snidely clever and more and more cloistered, and as it continues to hemhorrage readers left and right without bringing any new blood in, what with all the kids abandoning Spidey and Batsy and Supesy for a bunch of Japanese shit so it doesn't really matter because this period of mainstream comics is really just a holding pattern until the next big thing hits which probably won't happen for a *while*, especially with people like Bendis who thinks it's honestly a good idea to put LUKE CAGE ON THE AVENGERS* but whatever.

-HX

*Luke Cage IS awesome, but he was barely FF caliber, much less Avengers. In ten years, people will look back at this Avengers lineup like we look back at the JLA that had the breakdancing Latino gang member.

I myself only have room right now to be pissed off that Keanu Reeves is playing John Constintine from 'Hellblazer'.

I mean, Keanu Reeves? And oh yeah, Connstintine's American. WTF???

Thanks for posting the link from Greg. It's some slight consolation in this dark time *overly dramatic sigh*

Michael wants to see Constantine. I'll tag along on one condition... that I am nothing resembling sober.

No problem. You're right. It's a consolation, if a very slight one.
