Apparently Professor Santa came by my desk while I was away, because I have two bottles of wine and a humongous box of chocolates. They sure do know the way to my heart, don't they?

But the best gift was a lovely note from one of my favorite professors, taped to one of the wine bottles. This is one of our most distinguished and celebrated professors, a man who's constantly reading, writing, and studying. Yet he has always treated me with manners and respect, and never misses a chance to say "thank you." He even thanks me in the acknowledgements in his books.

It's not that hard to be human, and it makes all the difference in the world.

Wow, I feel positively Christmasy!

Why would you want to be a good girl? Don't you know that bad girls get the best presents from Santa? :)

Seriously, though, it's nice you're getting appreciation from the right people.

cheers,
Phil

It's absolutely amazing what a little appreciation does to morale, isn't it?

My favorite rule of dating is that you never go on a second date with someone who's rude to the waiter on the first. How someone treats his "inferiors" is the surest sign of character I know of.

It's likely not a coincidence that this guy is one of the more distinguished and celebrated professors -- people want to help him, so he gets materials faster, his books are better, and all is right. You, in your own small way, are in a position to mete justice.

From my limited experience in academia, there are two ways to become a superstar -- make everyone love you or make everyone fear you (Shaking off sudden Machiavelli flashback from political theory class). Fear is easier and yields quicker results, but everyone's knives are out when your back is turned.

Now if only more professors were like him, huh?

Nice. I have yet to get anything from my job like that, you know, that eeks out "I had to actually shop for this" (whether its personal or not).
