the odd thing is, since Bush and Kerry are substantively not very different, I don't see why "conservative" Democrats would see him as a better choice.
It's so fucked that Bush gets to play the war card, but Kerry is just as pro-war as he is. I don't get it. Strategically at this point it would make more sense for Kerry to come out as completely anti-war, since Bush is absorbing the pro-war vote anyway.
