Yahoo and GMail in free-email smackdown

More information from the New York Times and Slashdot, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] unanon

Maybe Yahoo should have waited a little longer to debut the new space, appreciated though it is, because my Yahoo account is not loading for crap, so half the time I don't know if I have new messages in my big new nice shiny mailbox.

And then GMail. Well, I have GMail now, though I haven't connected it to LiveJournal because of the complaints about LJ comment notification emails. And I've had the account less than 24 hours (and don't have any invite codes yet, because I know that's what you're thinking), but so far... I like it. It's a cleaner interface than Google, and [livejournal.com profile] ariedana and I think it's kind of like email and IM rolled into one. Yeah. So, the best place to get a hold of me these days is probably kellinator at gmail.

At any rate, I'm curious to watch what happens.

And yeah, count me in as one of those who feels cool just to have a GMail account. Like I got geek cred or something. I'm in the club. Yes, this is silly, but I think it's also a natural human reaction to anything involving invite codes.

Yeah, I'm ready to throw something at Yahoo at the mo. The engine's loading fine, it's definitely the new email format that's having issues - like about 50 of them. On random rotation. Knowing Yahoo, it will all be lovely in a few days - but I will be ready to bomb Sunnyvale by then.

I clearly have no geek cred, as I've never heard of Gmail till now...what do you think of the email scanning bit? That part worries me.

question

According to Slashdot, there's an issue with Akamai, the big Internet "Accelerator" which is affecting Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, and many of the big sites.

So it's not necessarily Yahoo's fault.

I'm lovin' it, especially since Yahoo and Hotmail are blocked at work, but they haven't blocked this (yet). Just wish I had this 3 months ago, when I got a lot more personal mail at work. It's really great for convos.

Now all I need is for the really selfish negative vibe merchants in our IT department to let us have access to web-based e-mail programs again so I can enjoy all these extra megs of space I'll never use.

So that's what GMail is. I hadn't paid any attention, though I'd seen the mentions of invites go past.

I got my first set of three invite codes today, and I've been with Gmail for less than a week. So they'll be coming along shortly.

Keep an eye near the top of your Gmail -- a red link will appear saying something like "Invite a friend to join Gmail". They don't notify you when the invite codes are there ... you just have to notice it.

What complaints about notification e-mails?

I just got Gmail today. My Gmail name is thisnameisthirtycharacterslong, because I could only choose a name between six and thirty characters long.
