How can you have writer's block when all you write are wanky LiveJournal entries, Law and Order drabbles, the hack-and-slash adventures of your RPG alter ego, and snarky emails to friends?

(And when I say "you", I mean me.)

Because there's such a thing as /selective/ writers' block. Worldblock, if you will, or settingblock.

You just have to write your way through it. Write whatever comes to mind. If nothing comes to mind, then you write, "I can't think of anything to write. Isn't that completely pitiful? Come on, brain, think THINK THINK!!" etc. etc.

if you're writing all that, then you don't have writer's block (which is just a cop out anyway), you're just blocked on whatever else it is you're trying to write. so keep writing that stuff and the block will pass.

or take whatever you're blocked on and walk it backwards a few steps and try taking it forward in a different direction. or just write some really shitty next part to it until it starts flowing again. you can go back and remove/revise the shitty part later.

look at it as a form of exercise. just as a good exercise routine isn't just one activity, crunches for example, but a variety of activities, so too should writing be varied. always have a couple (or more) stories in progress so if you hit a "block" you can just jump over to a different story and keep writing. that way you don't get lazy about it and you keep your hand(s) and brain in shape.

anyway, it's time to go home.

I hate writer's block. what I hate more is having great ideas, down to the very words and when it comes time to actually *write*, I lose my motivation. I know that this is something else at work, but I understand your frustration.

I've found writing with music on helps cut down on the negative internal dialogue and makes it easier to work.
