Last night while driving through the city I got to noticing all the Christmas lights that are not only still up, but still on. Ye gods, it looks like a trailer park out there...

Which got me to wondering.

Didn't answer the first one coz my response is "first weekend after New Year's down they come. Unless it's raining, in which case it's the first dry weekend after New Year's. Unless I'm sick, in which case it's the first weekend I'm healthy AND it's not raining after New Year's."

I love having white string lights up all year round for lighting up our porch. As I don't celebrate Christmas in the Woo!Christian!Jesus! sense, I don't really associate the lights with any particular time of the year anymore. I just like the way they look.

Lights are really an unobtrusive decoration. I use 'em as lighting in my room, actually. But that's interior lighting.

Garlands, etc., should never be up before Thanksgiving, and should be down by the first free weekend after the end of the season. My family starts the season on the Solstice, and ends it at New Year's.

(I'm just *now* coming to realize exactly how pagan my father's upbringing of us was.)
