1. How did your love for Homicide start? Who's your favorite character? What's your favorite episode? Why do you like that show better than other crime dramas?

I hardly ever watched Homicide during its original run -- in fact, one time I caught the Homicide half of a Law and Order/Homicide crossover and was disappointed by the lack of closure as opposed to Law and Order. But the summer of 2000, [livejournal.com profile] scarcrest gave me the book it's based on, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon, and I was completely blown away and started watching the show on Court TV every chance I got. My favorite character is Munch -- I identify with the way he uses sarcasm and conspiracy theories to avoid showing how much he really does care -- and while my favorite episode is subject to change as I catch up on episodes I've missed, I really love "Kaddish," the episode where Munch investigates the murder of the girl he loved from afar in high school. I'm also a huge fan of the "Sniper" two-parter, which helped get me hooked for good -- Pembleton taking off his bulletproof vest to put it on his pregnant wife, Munch snapping at Kay because he just can't bear the thought of seeing her get shot again, the detectives running toward the sound of the shots as everyone else runs away. Modern heroes.

I've always had a fondness for crime dramas -- I remembered, much to my embarrassment, that as a kid I really liked Hunter -- but Homicide is, IMHO, hands-down the best because of its writing, its flawed-but-admirable characters, its willingness to take risks. We hardcore fans call it "The Best Damn Show on Television."

2. What's the one acheivement that you're most proud of?

See, in the past I would have said "Graduating from Vanderbilt summa cum laude." But that no longer seems so important. So I'll just say: The fact that I'm still here, still kicking. I've been through some shit in the past few years, but it hasn't taken me out yet. And the good things I've done for my friends.

3. What's the biggest insight you've gained recently? How did it come about? How are you incorporating it into your life now?

Ummm.... lately, I'm not sure. Probably just that it's my responsibility to find and do the things that are going to make me happy. And the biggest step I've made toward embracing that is starting the novel. Also, trying to get in better shape.

4. Tell me about one of the rough periods of your life, and what you did to get through it. What did you learn from it?

There have been a lot of rough periods (because I'm a wuss! :P ) but the one that sticks in my head is the beginning of last August, when it finally hit me that I had no money and was about to have no job. I freaked. I lay awake at night panicking. But then I got up, wrote my resume, and started hunting. And less than a month later, I had a job. And it's not the perfect job, but it's the right job for right now.

What I learned: Lying around moaning makes it worse. Get up and do something. Granted, I don't always follow this advice, but now that you've gotten me thinking about it, maybe I'm more likely to.

5. What's your favorite comic book series, and why?

My absolute favorite is The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius by Judd Winick. Lots of eminently quotable foul-mouthed potty humor... what's not to love?

"Bitch, you ever stick anything in my can, we better be married."
