Harry Potter!

I admit I'm late to the phenomenon, I haven't even read all the books yet (so don't tell me any spoilers!), but I think Harry Potter is friggin' awesome. I'm really excited about the next movie, and I plan to sit down and read all the books straight through as soon as possible.

One of my co-workers and I had a very involved Harry Potter discussion yesterday. It included the exchange:

Me: I worry about Harry when he's with the Dursleys in the summer.
Amy: I think everyone does.

My younger brother and I used to be Harry Potter FANATICS. I've read all the books dozens of times - we used to have little trivia quizzes, scrapbooks, illustrated guides (all done ourselves, natch) - the works! It was fun while it lasted.

Up until the start of his 6th grade year, I'm sure my brother thought he was going to Hogwarts. ;)

I have to admit I thought they were REALLY children's books until I found the first one at a yard sale for a quarter...I figured what the hay, right?! THEN I GOT SUCKED IN!!! They are awesome!!!

As an insatiable reader who has read an awful lot of BAD fiction over the years, I really didn't want to like the Harry Potter books because of the massive popular following they had. In my experience, a huge popular following among the masses usually only happens with bad fiction (*coughcoughROBERTJORDANcoughcough*).

I also was damned envious of her for being able to make a living writing. But people I trusted kept telling me I needed to read the books. So I sat down in Borders one afternoon and picked up the first book. The next thing I knew, four hours had gone by and I had nearly finished the book. I immediately bought it and the other three, all in hardcover (yes, I was that impressed).

The bottom line is that Rowling's books may appeal to kids, but they're not just kids' books. They're something that appeals to all of us. And for people like me who believe in magic anyway, they're the perfect escape.
