My mom emailed me to have a look on the net at polycystic ovarian syndrome. Well, this explains at least some of my weight gain, my depression, and other assorted symptoms. This disease affects 6-10% of women, most of whom don't even know it.

Of course my doctor didn't offer anything useful. He doesn't care. How many of my male doctors have patted my shoulder and told me to eat out less when I tried to tell them something was wrong? It took my only female doctor to take me seriously.

Until the medical profession gets some enlightenment, I think I'll switch exclusively to female doctors.

I've had the same problem forever. I get the "Why don't you just try this diet" crap all the time. But then, they don't pay attention to the excess estrogen, lack of progesterone which causes weight gain too. And makes it harder to lose. Stupid doctors. Even the woman dr I went to didn't want to listen to me. Everyone has the "Just diet. If you stick to it you'll lose weight" theory and say it like the only way their idea would fail is if *I* screw it up. Not that they could ever be wrong.

I feel more comfortable with a male doctor. It's easier to discuss what's wrong with me. If I were female, I would probably have a female GP and OB/GYN as well.

May I recmmend Dr. Mark Perloe? He is male, but he's the only doctor I've ever run in to in Atlanta who really stays on the leading edge of knowing about PCOS.

Female Doctors Just as Bad!

My best friend saw a female doctor and female nurse. Even though she hadn't had a period in years they did nothing for her. She complained, she begged, she exhbited all the signs of PCOS. After a year or two of being ignored by the female doctor and the female nurse practioner, she went to a male doctor who promptly ordered an unltrasound. Guess what they found a couple cysts and then one very large one, oh only about the size of a baseball, wrapped around her left falopian tube and laying up against her uteras, basically crushing it. Her new doctor ordered her surgery, they removed the cysts and now her chances of having a baby on her own without major help are pretty much nill.

A bad doctor is a bad doctor, that is all their is to it. I am sure you can tell I am bitter. One of the bigger signs is dark rims around your neck and in your armpits. Weight is a big one too and one of the doctors my best friend went to see said that weight loss actually causes PCOS to reverse itself. Except that it is really hard to lose weight with polycystic ovaries, go figure.

You should demand an ultrasound. Print this story out, tell them what one of their collegues did to my best friend and tell them you will not let them do it to you!

I should have mentioned that he has a web site at http://www.ivf.com/ . It isn't well-designed, but there's a lot of information there. Just use the search engine.

The joys of the modern medical practice. Very seldom do doctors care about patients any more--it's all about quotas and spreadsheets, instead.

Now that you have something to work on, though, research, research, research! The more well-informed you are, the better able you will be to authoritatively demand the level of treatment you deserve. And you must make those demands--twice I've been diagnosed with cancer, and both times have been after I decided not to listen to my dr tell me it was nothing. You have to be responsible for your own health. Good luck, hon. {hugs}

I have a female doctor too....

I really prefer females taking care of my health concerns....I guess it's because I'm a moon-child.

I prefer female doctors, too. I prefer it because they are easier to talk to and I trust them more. But, of course, I am sure there are good male doctors and bad female doctors. It's just my preference. Of course, women are *more likely* to be sympathetic to the pains that only women get and men be more sympathetic to the pains that only men get. It's human nature. So, overall, I would think women doctors are better for women.

Kell, I don't know if you'll even remember it, but a few weeks ago I posted about a doctor suggesting a condition to me.

This was my female dermatologist (of all people), and she is convinced that I have PCOS. Convinced. Said I have a lot of the classic symptoms (which I don't have to get into since you've read the stuff).

I am SCARED TO DEATH of going to the gyno, but I am just about convinced that I need to find out if PCOS is what I have. I've read a lot of the stuff...and I've talked to my derm. about it a lot...and supposedly, if that's what I have...there are things that can make me feel better.

I'm on a constant emotional roller coaster (you know, you've ready my insane posts...lol), and that alone would be worth finding out if PCOS is really what's wrong with me.

Check into it...and if you find a good female dr....let me know...b/c I intended for only one man in my life to have his hands down there...and since I haven't met him yet, it sure won't be a doctor....LMAO. :O)
