Overheard at the University of the Damned

My co-workers and I had to go to get our campus IDs replaced today at lunchtime. We were standing there waiting while an extremely stereotypical undergrad was babbling to her friends about why she just couldn't be bothered to go to her math class which is boring because she doesn't understand what's going on:

"That's like fifty minutes out of my life when I could be napping or eating!"

We just stared at each other in shocked horror as the student whatever you are when you're in college but don't actually study anything started sharing with the entire room that she was wearing Superman underwear.

Geesh, and you wonder why some of us former undergrads hated fraternities and sororities...

[identity profile] lac.livejournal.com 2004-09-24 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And then she'll come into the video store and give me attitude because I ask for her ID to check out her movie or about her fines. At which point I could respond "well, if you went to Math class, you'd know that a full week late means a full week's late fee of $20.95" And then that could be kind of fun.

Seriously, I shudder for the future of the free world.

Yeah, but yours probably aren't the first ones you could find when you woke up in the fraternity basement in a pile of what you sincerely hope was just vomit...

::flashbacks of Meet the Feebles:: LOL. OK: that mental picture was well drawn. I am very suggestive; may I go home and be ill now?

Sure! Bedtime for everyone!

Oh... you meant suggestABLE.... And here I was, thinking you were propositioning me.

You see, a woman threatening to be sick was pretty much my early dating interaction....

Darlin' - if you weren't 10 hours away (and in a relationship with a wonderful woman), I might feel some remorse about teasing - I mean harmlessly flirting with - you. I am both suggestive and overly imaginative.

Distance is a problem for you? Guess 10 hours is a bit of a drive....

[identity profile] sharrainchains.livejournal.com 2004-09-28 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, it's not how long the drive is: it's how you use it! I drove down on a Friday for D's going away party (and back the next day)...

[personal profile] dwivian 2004-09-29 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
And, how do you use the drive? I can see how you might use the visit....

I knew I wasn't missing anything at a big name frou frou school. I was free to nap on my state school tuition and not feel that guilty about it.

"That's like fifty minutes out of my life when I could be napping or eating!"

Replace "napping" and "eating" with "sucking dick" and "doing drugs", and that'd be a roommate I had ever so briefly one summer at college.

50 years ago, graduating from high school showed one had a decent education and was enough to get a good job.

20 years ago, a high school diploma meant crap and you had to have a college degree to get a decent job.

Looks like now a bachelors degree is heading from meaning "educated" to meaning "parents could afford to support me through four years of keggers" and you'll need a masters degree to get a decent job.

50 years from now they're going to have to invent a new degree that's one step past the worthless Ph. D. to be able to tell the cluefull from the burned-out party animals.

Good call.

If the teenagers in Roswell are any indication, the situation isn't going to improve any time soon.

:shudder: This place is so scary.

Maybe we can do lunch next week and swap stories!

[identity profile] sharrainchains.livejournal.com 2004-09-24 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, dear. I feel like I should be singing Let's Do the Time Warp, Again... ::sigh:: That could have been me... except that I didn't own any Superman underwear. ::pout:: I want some.

As a graduate of Emory, I'd just like to state that I really hate most Emory students.

mmmm sounds like she's on track for a fine career in the Math dept someday.

[identity profile] galateadia.livejournal.com 2004-09-24 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, as a janitor...
but of course that is only if karma takes action now.
*sigh*

Me, I would have told her that if she wasn't planning on leaving to change in a phone booth then nobody else was really interested.

[identity profile] crowyhead.livejournal.com 2004-09-24 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I may have said something similar about one of my math classes once. But probably not in public.

[identity profile] mrswarkie.livejournal.com 2004-09-25 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'll share the look of shock horror, and also add a jaw drop! What does she think she's at college for?

And why did she take a math subject anyway? Unless you really enjoy the logic of maths, or you're really good at it, of course something that strict is going to be boring. It's not like sociology where you can turn a discussion on the tribal tattooing of the Maori people into an argument over the new Cover Girl spring make up.

What a dumbass!

ah... life in the fast lane. Amazing.. when they pay for university.. and they do that with classes.. stupid. At least in high school it is relatively free
