Sucks to be me, just a tiny tiny bit

I'd heard some rumblings on the radio about 99X becoming the first "digital only" station or some bullshit like that (seriously, I'm pretty damn sure there have been "digital only" stations for a while) but had pretty successfully ignored it because that would require giving a damn or something. Then this morning in the car I got the unpleasant surprise of "The Bert Show." Turns out what they really meant was they're replacing 99X with Q100 or one of those crap stations and sticking 99X on teh intarwubz where I can't listen to it in my car, which is the only place I ever listen to the radio anyway.

I'm pretty annoyed because I don't know of a single other Atlanta station that doesn't suck, except the Georgia State station, which is too hip for me anyway. Oh, and NPR, but really, I don't need anything intellectual distracting me while I'm trying to drive. James likes Star 94, but anything that plays Hannah Montana is just not what I'm looking for. Anyone got any recommendations? Because I really don't need to be fucking with my CD player in traffic.

It bums me out. 99X wasn't always great, but it was pretty dependable for a morning show that jibed with my sense of humor (most of the time) and music that usually didn't want to make me gouge my eardrums out (that Korn Bizkit phase of theirs notwithstanding). Bringing back the '90s alternative ruled. I guess really it's sentimental; I found 99X right when I got to Atlanta and eight years later, it's one of the few things from back then still in my life (I feel like I've gone through three personalities or something).

In that vein, I am going to try to come back to LJ a little bit, for real this time. I don't expect I'll be posting or commenting much, but it would be good to try and catch up with what's going on with my friends.

Um, Dave FM maybe? That's the only other one I listen to besides NPR (and it's almost always NPR). Otherwise, CDs?

[identity profile] reannon.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for being back! :)

I gave up on radio years ago and went to mix CDs. Now I have my lovely little gizmo that broadcasts from my shiny iPod to the radio. I strongly recommend. Just remember to do a playlist in advance, or you'll kill yourself trying to forward through unwanted songs while driving. :)

I recommend XM radio a million times over. I haven't listened to regular radio in almost 2 years!

So far this seems to be happening just in the mornings; 99X is still there in the afternoons when I go home. Still sucks though... I hope it's not going totally internet. -..-

[identity profile] spudmanson.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
it is, 99X's official last day is FRIDAY.

[identity profile] kth-dragon.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Well, there goes that. I can't listen to the radio on my work computer, which is the place I'd need it.

[identity profile] spudmanson.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
PROJECT 961 aka, the station that used to be 96 rock. It's gotten very good since the buzz took over at least a year ago, and has made a great replacement for the sucktastic thing that 99X became.

Seriously. Is good. No Hannah Montana. I swear.

Nice to see you. :-)

[identity profile] marlatiara.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Although I knew this was coming (read about the firing of Leslie and the other DJs, etc.) I still was really annoyed this morning.

I like Album 88, NPR, and uh...there's another college station in our presets. Plus Dave FM isn't that bad.

[identity profile] anne-jumps.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*random commenter is random*

I'm bummed out too. I started listening to 99x back when it started in... 1992? Jeez. It's going to be weird having it gone (I don't think having it online counts, and I hope it fails miserably).

I've missed you!

[identity profile] digitaldevil.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Being in Atlanta radio, I openly admit I mostly listen to my iPod in the car. I'll flip between Album 88, Dave, and Project 961 when I want something different, but I usually don't last more than 2-3 songs on each station.

The subscription for satellite radio is the same as the cost of a CD. Its pretty cheap and works everywhere. And many models of receiver let you take it from your car to your house to listen to it there.

Yeah.

which links to the lj atlanta post, which pastes Steve
posting on his myspace about getting cut in mid show :(

I vote ipod Music Player and podcasts. Despite (or because of) Sturgeons law there is some good stuff out there.

O hai!

[identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought I saw somebody say 99x was going to be available on HD Radio. So, get one of those, and while you're at it, spring for satellite capability too, and enyoy.

Or get an iPod chock full of everything you really like, plug that up to your car stereo and forget about radios and changing CDs and etc. forever.

I *feel* your pain. I'm listening this a.m. and thinking, "I don't know Hoss. I don't care who Hoss is. I could give a flying fuck that he sold his press pass on the interwebs. Give me back my familiar suckage. Cause you know, it was like...familiar!"

[identity profile] raistlinbrown.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If you can afford $50 for the cheapest model radio and then a monthly fee of about $12, I can not recommend Sirius highly enough. There is so much great stuff on there in terms of music (no commercials at all for every genre you could ever imagine including some great indie/fringe stuff), talk (including two NPR stations), and sports (all the NFL and all the NBA). You will never want to go back to that advertisement-packed regular radio garbage again.

[identity profile] raistlinbrown.livejournal.com 2008-01-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And Sirius has a 90s alt channel. :- )

[identity profile] not-hothead-yet.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 Sirius

it rocks my world tobe able to switch from Rave to techno to blues to 90s alternative to 80s to original hip-hop/rap to NPR to comedy to comedy to NPR to original new wave to chill out to French/Latin alternative (yes, I am not making that up)

whenever I'm listening in my car I wish I could get my shit together enough to put the antennae up on the roof so I could take my receiver inside like it's made to do.

[identity profile] godessillyria.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sirius Baby!!! Once you listen to it, you will never, ever go back to terrestrial radio. They have to coolest selections of stations. You'll not regret it.

[identity profile] stevenglassman.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I missed reading you, so I'm glad you've decided to come back for a bit.

[identity profile] godessillyria.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
oh and you can try it out on line for free for 3 days. It's such a treat not having to endure those wretched commercials.

[identity profile] not-hothead-yet.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
hell if you call them, you can get 30 days for free. We did that.

[identity profile] ryver.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have to say 99X was the only thing I missed from Atlanta. I'm sad to see it go.

i love NPR, but it was a slow affection. give it another try. i think you have to grow to like it on a daily basis. now i wouldn't think of driving without it.

[identity profile] kth-dragon.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. It's not "digital only," they're touting it as the first "visual radio station." I'm still pissed that that means they're taking it off the actual radio and making it internet-exclusive, since I wouldn't be able to partake of it when I really need to (work, in the car). *shakes fist*

[identity profile] spikepage.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck 99X!

Get an XM or Sirius or whichever. YOu get the 200 stations, NO ads, NO fat-assed acne-golem morning deejay masturbatory morning shows, and above all, NO having to miss half your favourite song because you just drove under an overpass or over an underpass or whichever.

Do it. You can thank me later.

[identity profile] not-hothead-yet.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
oh and another nice thing about satellite radio: it has a pause button AND a "notify" button. when you hear a song you love you can tell the receiver to notify you next time it comes on (no matter which channel its playing on) AAaaaaand if you have to run inside the store but don't want to miss your song you can hit "pause" and listen to it when you come back. IS THAT COOL OR WHAT?!
