bitching about a sport I don't even like

Well, congratulations to the Florida Gators, national champions according to the BCS (Bullshit Computer Stupidity). Please don't smack me, [profile] heathrow. I admit I was one of the haters who didn't think Florida deserved to be in the title game. I mean, they nearly blew it in the fourth quarter against Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt. I love my alma mater and I think our team was actually a lot better this year than their final record suggested, but still, it's Vanderbilt. If Vandy trumps you on yardage, I'm just not sure you deserve to be playing for the national championship. Oh well, shows what I know. The whole menu of BCS bowls shows what anyone knows, with so many of the late-season contenders getting pwned. Yes, I said that.

And the bowls! I thought all the Salad Bowls and Toilet Bowls with 6-6 teams were over in 2006, but they've stretched well into the new year. I hate to bash on the bowls too much, because it's a nice opportunity for kids from Middle Tennessee State to get to play on the national stage, but really, if you went 6-6 in the SEC, do you really deserve a bowl? More mid-majors and lower, less mediocrity from the big boys.

So the bazillion bowls and adding another game to the regular schedule while claiming that a playoff would take too long and impede the student-athletes' education (like an extra game won't?) is really making me think about how much bullshit it is that the powers that be won't institute an actual playoff. Apparently because they suck. Look at how much everyone hates and totally ignores March Madness. Yes, it's much more fun to waste 40% of the season screaming about the polls and the BCS instead of talking about, y'know, actual sports.

Not to mention that student-athlete's education is impaired in Div I-AA, Division II, and Division III...why? those divisions have football playoffs...Those who believe the BCS is to help the student athlete, I've got a Nigerian Prince who needs help with his finances...oh yes, coaches and schools get big money; the players get some nice trinkets, but are forbidden to accept more than $500 in value of any BCS swag they get...cant let the field workers get any taste of the manor house you know...

Will also add that FL was lucky to defeat South Carolina...it took the same guy blocking an extra point AND a winning field goal for FL to defeat their old coach in The Swamp....

Just to give a very weak defense to the shame of the SC game, it was a case of psychological voodoo when playing against Spurrier. It's similar to why Georgia can't get its ass in gear against Florida every year over the last 2 decades.

I politely disagree. (You have to admit, I'm not an in-your-face Gator fan. :D ) However, I do think the BCS system is crap. Playoffs would be much more sane.

I do think that Florida's win last night will hopefully show the people who vote that the SEC is the toughest (and best) conference. And it was nice to see OSU fans looking that damned shocked during the game.

Hey, you know I'm just jealous because you guys have two national championships in a year and Vandy has what? *BWAHAHAHAHAAAA*

Though I do have to say, while I agree that the SEC is the toughest conference in the nation, I think Florida owes its appearance at least in part to Urban Meyer's lobbying.

[identity profile] heathrow.livejournal.com 2007-01-09 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps. Michigan had a harder case because they didn't even win their conference. It made a better case for Mr. Meyer's well-timed interviews. ;)

Excuse me, but that's the Hidden Valley© Original Ranch© Dressing Salad Bowl and the Clorox© ToiletWand™ Toilet Bowl.

And about the fact that there are way too many bowls these days: paraphrasing The Incredibles, "If everyone's special, no one is."

Bowl games make a metric fucktonne of money for the schools and the myriad host cities, which is why bowl games won't go away.

The closest thing I've ever heard to an honest-to-god REAL reason why there aren't football playoffs is because football has a much higher risk of injury, and a long postseason like that would increase the chance of harm to the players. That and since football teams play once a week, versus every few days like basketball teams, a tournament would take far too long.

I'm so glad to be out of the freaking Midwest, land of the Big 10, where college basketball is practically ignored. I've felt as if Ohio State and Michigan were both overrated all season long, and this just proves it.

And I absolutely adore March Madness, but you have to admit, Selection Sunday is fraught with its own controversy and stupidity. In some sense, the opacity and subjective nature of the selection process protects it from the criticism that the BCS "formula" gets from claiming to be more objective.

I didn't really care about the results one way or another, but it would have been nice if Ohio had shown up to the game.
