For years I've wanted my own copy of one of my favorite movies but I've been resolutely refusing to buy it because the DVD features were crap and I figured if there was a movie that deserved a bells and whistles special edition, this was it. Well, my wait is over. The Shawshank Redemption with bells and whistles, baybeeeee.

And in new movie news, the film version of Friday Night Lights, one of my favorite books, hits theaters today. Football bores me silly, but this book is one of the best reflections on sports and society I've ever read. And the movie features Billy Bob Thornton, today's pick for Vaguely Sleazy Guy I Think Is Hot in Spite of Myself.

By the way, you know what's really amusing? Hearing a couple of resolutely straight guys nonetheless list off actors they think are hot and really getting into it. I'm not naming names, but someone's got a thing for Boromir and Faramir. Which I can totally understand. They poked holes in my theory that everyone wants to do David Bowie, though.

Oh man. OF COURSE, I already own Shawshank...but that probably won't stop me from buying the special edition and selling the other one to a used DVD store.

The really sad thing is, the point of the book (and the movie, according to a reveiw I read yesterday) is that that sort of stuff is fucked-up. Never underestimate the power of advertisers to completely miss and/or ignore a message...

Oh honey, I could've burst your Bowie theory a long time ago if I'd known of it. He falls in the same category as Mick Jagger and Steven Tyler...shriveled up nasty pieces of man-jerky that have been chewed on by every passing dog. I wouldn't touch them with gloves on!

The theory mainly applies to guys... the idea being that even straight guys want to do David Bowie. I find Bowie hot in a way I don't the other two, though. Though I've seen the Stones live and Jagger is proof that attitude is everything... ugly as sin but somehow hot in spite of it because he's thinks he's hot.

I did see in a magazine article one time that he has this fabulous Indonesian-themed villa type place on an island somewhere. I wanted that house.

Something really cool I learned about the movie trailer for Friday Night LIghts is the opening shot of driving down the road was shot in Manhattan Kansas, where I did my undergrad. Woot K-State!

It's funny that you posted it today as this very evening we were going to "educate" a couple of people who hadn't seen the movie yet (and considering exactly HOW many movies these people had seen we were kinda shocked they hadn't seen Shawshank Redemption yet). Heh.
