So I specifically planned to be out of the house last night because I just knew that if I watched the debate, the evening would end with my foot in the television. But after hearing y'all's comments on it, I'm kinda wondering if I should have checked it out anyway. My desire not to have an aneurysm isn't really a valid reason to opt out of the political process.

...On the other hand, I just read some more post-debate analysis and now I want to go soak my head, so maybe I did make the right decision after all. Fair warning: I expect to be damn near insufferable for the next month.

CNN and the other networks were re-airing the debate all last night and will probably continue throughout the day, if you wanted to catch it.

Well, with the exception of dwivian, who is living in Bizzaro World, everyone I've spoken to agrees with me that Kerry basically had Bush for lunch. Kerry was coherent, well spoken, specific in his responses, poised, and actually answered the questions instead of dodging around.

He also got in a few good zingers. "Senator Kerry, what do you feel were some of President Bush's 'errors in judgement' that you cited earlier?" "Well...where to begin?"

Basically, he cleaned the guy's clock. Bush repeatedly looked like a deer caught in oncoming headlights, or else he was grimacing and squirming, and several times he was silent for at least ten seconds, stumbling for words. Apparently in some circles this is "speaking from the heart", but one's heart is useless without a working head.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he cleaned Bush's clock, but I think Kerry got the better end of the debate, partially because he had lower expectations to exceed - which he did admirably - and partially because he was clear, concise, and did very little of the "overexplaining" that his detractors have spun into flip-flopping.


That said, there were no knockout punches or clock-cleaning.

Bush lost, BIG.

He didn't really SAY much of anything. Most of his point and counterpoint was repetition, verbal fumbling, meaningless drivel. He was by turns childish and petulant, rude (raising his voice and shouting out "let me respond to that!", practically waving his arms to get a rebuttal), arrogant and smug. He made me laugh out loud several times, made me angry several times, and made me shake my head in disbelief. Foreign policy was supposed to be Bush's strong suit, and Kerry handed him his ass, his head, and his balls. I'm feeling pretty happy with the outcome, and gleeful that there are two MORE of these. Seriously, Bush looked WORSE than Nixon going up against JFK.

For what possible reason should you have watch the debate, NOTHING either candidate could or would say was going to change your vote. Short of Kerry pulling a gun and shooting the President, being arrested and we having to choose two new candidates.
