Well, that didn't go quite as planned...

Last night I thought I'd ring in the New Year by making another attempt at dyeing my hair really, really purple with a pack of "Plum Rose" dye I got at Sally's Beauty Supply.

So this morning I'm looking in the mirror and I realize that while my hair does not seem to be any more purple, my scalp does.

Oh well. At least this time I didn't dye my neck purple!

Kel

WHere are the pictures.. Maybe you should call a good gay friend of yours who does hair cut and color and have him help you. Hun, it's not good to do it on your own.

Hugs

What type of developer did you use? You probably need to use a stronger one. I shall color your hair properly next time I see you. ;)

Is it that stuff in the pink package from Sally? I tried that once, and it added plum to my already orangey-red (at the time) hair. But it really purpled my scalp. *nodnod*

I have never found a permanent hair dye that did unnatural colors (other than red) as well as a bottle of bleach and some manic panic. Or punky colors. I'm aware that you are not likely to want to lighten your hair to get the desired purple effect, but I'm telling you that when my hair was extremely purple (and I wish I had any pictures, but I don't) it was with wella quickblue and manic panic ultra-violet. That will also turn your scalp purple, as well as any other skin it comes in contact with.

I disagree with your friend- I think there's nothing wrong with coloring your own hair. But once you mess with things that require developer and once your hair is already colored, you run the risk of an interaction. For me, it's just hair and I can cut it off if something odd happens. For other people that are more attached to that stuff on their head, it might be best to go to a pro or get a friend who is a pro to do it. :)

I'd say go with Special Effects instead of Manic Panic or Punky, but then that's the purple color that's currently on my head. ;) Otherwise, I agree. If you really want purple, you're simply going to have to lighten it.

Ah, yes. I've been using synth hair for a couple years now instead of dyeing it, so Special FX didn't really exist when I was coloring my hair. I think I used the red once when it first came out, right before I did extensions, and it was more effective than MP or Punky, but fried my hair. Plus the dye smelled like a strawberry shortcake doll, which frightened me. :)
