*eeeeeevil cackle*

I have just learned that in Salt Lake City, you can be jailed for up to one month for failing to return a library book.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering, Pinky?

Eating an entire New York-style cheesecake, Brain?

I like the way you think, Pinky!

Actually, you can't, but it's a semantic difference.

What you can be is jailed for up to a month for failure to pay a verdict that you owe the library for a book.

"(1)If any person injures any book owned by the state law library or fails to return any book taken from the State Law Library, that person shall pay the state law librarian all loss or damage sustained because of the injury or failure to return, including costs and reasonable attorneys' fees.

(2) The state law librarian, in behalf of the state, shall bring action in the name of the state for the collection of all damages sustained and all losses and penalties imposed under this section."

Utah Code Ann. § 9-7-305

"The following acts or omissions in respect to a court or proceedings therein are contempts of the authority of the court... Disobedience of any lawful judgment, order or process of the court." Utah Code Ann. § 78-32-1(5).

"If the court finds the person is guilty of the contempt, the court may impose a fine not exceeding $ 1,000, order the person incarcerated in the county jail not exceeding 30 days, or both. However, a justice court judge or court commissioner may punish for contempt by a fine not to exceed $ 500 or by incarceration for five days or both." Utah Code Ann. § 78-32-10.

Oh, forgot to mention... this is for the state law library... but there's just not a good quote for the same thing and normal libraries...

Ooops... I sit corrected by the badass law student...

Corrected by a law student... what a novel experience for you. :)

(Of course, a law student who's friendly, helpful, and correct, as in this case, probably *is* a new experience...)

I think so, Brain...
