Time to mock the Lakers!

The NBA season starts tomorrow. For me, this means it's time to root for the Celtics and Mavs, watch the league embarrass itself, and boo the Lakers.

It rather runs in my family that it's not enough for us to simply root for the teams we love. No, we must also hate our favorite team's rival with the passion of a thousand white-hot burning suns. This is why my parents and I loathe the University of Tennessee -- though really, the Vandy/UT rivalry is mostly in Vanderbilt's head. And since my parents raised me as a Celtics fan as well as a Vandy fan, well, we all really, really hate the Lakers. I mean, really hate them.

[livejournal.com profile] scarcrest recently told me that "Schadenfreude is a very human emotion." Well, I sure hope so, because that makes me feel a little better about being positively gleeful about stuff like this:

Shaq, Kobe in yet another pissing contest

Seriously, I'm fascinated by the business and psychology of sports. I find the halftime show just as interesting, if not more so, as the game. And this is shaping up to be a very soap-opera season...

Heh. Schadenfreude is one of my interests. *grin*

Human emotions

Well, I have "weltschmerz" as one of mine.

Hate the Lakers, yet ended up with two of those fuckers on my fantasy team (Malone and Payton, the least objectionable Lakers, at least). This team does not need to win this year.

And Kobe Bryant is an asshole.

Agreed, agreed, and agreed. Who's your pick for the champion this year?

I'd pick San Antonio to repeat.

I would, hating them and all, pick LA. But they have a lot going on with team chemistry and off the court issues that leaves me wary in picking them. However, they could prove me wrong.

What about you?

I'd have to concur on the Spurs being the most likely candidate. I'd love to see Dallas win, but I don't know if that's realistic. I don't think the East has a shot. And I'm hoping that the Lakers' chemistry or lack thereof is going to provide my Laker-hating ass with hours and hours of amusement. (ESPN.com actually included the headline "Laker haters rejoice" today!!)

As I said, my atheism would be re-confirmed if LA wins the title this year.

Dallas didn't add any size or defense. They still have a shot with so much talent. They just need a lot more breaks than the other top Western teams....which they got a lot of last year before Dirk went down.
