Shiny San Francisco Stories: Becoming a cliche

So my first full day in San Francisco, I was on Haight St. (motherfucking Haight-Ashbury!! motherfucker!!) feeling very cool when suddenly what the rest of y'all already knew hit me like a pillowcase full of bricks.

"I'm a boring person who dyed my hair purple so I would fit in out here!! Oh my gosh!! I'm a cliche!!"

[livejournal.com profile] gamgee's response was something along the lines of "Yes, we all knew that, but if we had said it it would have sounded mean."

Embrace your clicheness! Who cares about being an individual? Trifle difficult with 6 billion of us on this planet. Better to be yourself. And if you wanted to dye your hair purple, and did it, more power to you. It's a very polite and decent thing to try to fit it, anyway. Miss Manners would be proud ;-)

You didn't hit the nearest Hard Rock cafe and get a shot glass, did you?

[identity profile] kellinator.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no. Even I have to draw the line somewhere.

[identity profile] weaktwos.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there ya go. You haven't delved deeply into the pit of cliche, then.

I thought it was sadder that you want to dye your hair purple, but cannot allow yourself to do that in ATL, you had to wait until vacation.

Dye it!

[identity profile] astrophysicat.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Exactly. I have always wanted to dye my hair purple and have
never done it. So there. I am even more pathetic than you. Thbbpt. :P

Well, I've got half a bottle of Special Effects Pimpin' Purple I can slap in the mail to you... ;)

[identity profile] nanne.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Please do. Send her that temptation. She will not resist.

Keep encouraging me, and I'll throw in a bottle of bleach so the color will actually last longer than a week.

Consider yourself encouraged. Please.

Now I'm becoming very tempted to at least go Scully red... the problem with that is, I can't wear my pink lipsticks. And I like my pink lipsticks!!

[identity profile] fairylogic.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
actually, the right shade of pink can look gorgeous with red hair. But I advise you to invest in a tube of deep, slutty red so you can work the whole redheaded sexpot look.

Did you get your photo taken at the corner of H&A? Cause that's cliche to the max.

Oh good grief, yes I did. I AM a cliche!! **runs off screaming**

[identity profile] buckthorn.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to stay there with a butch lesbian to fit in. Not sure if that's a cliche or not.

[identity profile] alison-says.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I did the purple/pink/blue hair thing in high school, and then had to get a job. How's *that* for cliche?

[identity profile] becala.livejournal.com 2003-07-14 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I would argue that a boring person would not dye the hair purple in the first place.

What's more of a cliche: being crazy when you have the opportunity, or being someone like me who constantly tells herself she will manage to never have a job where she has to look normal? I've managed that thus far with 4 years of working in the Real World and 3 of being a College Student. Of course, when I had a Real Job I did not make that much money, but I was technically an IT professional. But we are no longer in the middle of the huge tech boom and I find it highly unlikely that when I enter the real world I will continue to be able to look like a freak and have a job.

So what I'm saying in my roundabout homework-procrastinating way is: We are all boring when we have to make a living. I think it takes more than being wacky when you're allowed to to make a cliche.
