you can't earn someone's love, they can only give it to you. But I'd have to say in response to a comment above, you only think you can earn someone's trust, oftentimes they still won't give it to you even if you deserve it, and you should be ready for that dissappointment as well... (speaking of my parents...)
I don't think it is true in all cases of love. I mean, there's unconditional love that one has for a child or pet. Arguably, one can say that all love is conditional, it just may be that the special object of your affection meets your conditions naturally.
From a relationship perspective, if I'm in love with a man who jerks me around continually, I really won't stay in love with him. And I certainly will stop giving him any love. Sure, I'll be broken hearted, but membership in my heart must be maintained via compatible neuroses.
