Haven't heard the song, but found the article interesting:

My favorite part is Steve Gill's claim that Steve Earle is doing this to "revive his flagging career." Flagging by whose standards? As opposed to Shania et al, he actually has musical credibility. And I seriously doubt Steve Earle gives a damn what those shallow fucks in Nashville think of him.

Steve Gill is an annoying idiot who uses patriotism and anti-income tax sentiment to get himself some free publicity. He is one of my least favorite people in the world.

And I think Steve Earle gave up going mainstream after he got out of prison. I think he's cool enough to have the balls to stand up for himself and what he thinks is right. Not to mention his music is much better than anything on KDF or WSM.
