Waking up in time to watch bits and pieces of the Today show certainly makes life more interesting. And that one with Paula Zahn on CNN, that has the cranky old guy who I love because he doesn't pretend to be happy to be out of bed so damn early. What's his name?

Katie Couric interviewed the couple in Utah whose daughter was kidnapped. I felt so terrible for them. They looked horrible; the mother could barely even speak. Why does shit like this happen?

What confuses me is how they didn't realize R. Kelly was a sexual predator. Shouldn't it have set off some red flags when he married Aaliyah when she was, like, fifteen? And he's settled out of court how many times?

I was too young to understand the Rob Lowe scandal, but can someone tell me how it was different from this (or not)? My impression is he was much closer in age to the girl in that case, but I want clarification.

Is it in Tom Brokaw's contract that NBC must refer to "the Greatest Generation" every five minutes?

Whatever. I love him anyway. I grew up with him. I totally understood what my mom meant when she said recently, "On September 11 I knew I'd feel like it was going to be okay if I could just see Tom Brokaw."

Rob Lowe was 24 and the women were 18 and 16. If it would have been "normal" sex and not filmed, he would not have been breaking any laws...

He blew it at the Democratic convention in Atlanta where, while campaigning on behalf of Michael Dukakis, he picked up two women in a nightclub, took them to his hotel and filmed them in what was subsequently described as a 'lesbian clinch'. The women stole the tape and, a year later, the mother of the younger girl filed for personal injury. The girl was 16 and underage by the law of Georgia, where you must be 18 before you indulge in any lesbian activity. The case was settled out of court. Lowe did community service.

You have to be 18 to be a lesbian in Georgia? What a strange thing to legislate. On top of that, it's a different age than for heterosexual sex? So you're mature enough in the eyes of the law at 16 to engage in sex acts that could possibly get you pregnant, but not until 18 can you do something that might squick a pudish person out.

1). This was, what? Fourteen years ago? Sodomy laws are still on the books in many states, and even more so at that time.

2). People in Georgia are stupid. They've elected Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney, Zell Miller, and my personal nemesis, Newt Gingrich...

The age of consent in Georgia is 16 regardless of the gender of the people involved. However, because of the sodomy laws, homosexual couples aren't given many options.

Cut and pasting Georgia code section 16-2-2 "Sodomy" defines sodomy as:

(a) A person commits the offense of sodomy when he performs or submits to any sexual act involving the sex organs of one person and the mouth or anus of another. A person commits the offense of aggravated sodomy when he commits sodomy with force and against the will of the other person.

(b) A person convicted of the offense of sodomy shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than 20 years. A person convicted of the offense of aggravated sodomy shall be punished by imprisonment for life or by imprisonment for not less than ten nor more than 20 years. Any person convicted under this Code section of the offense of aggravated sodomy shall, in addition, be subject to the sentencing and punishment provisions of Code Sections 17-10-6.1 and 17-10-7.
