It's a fashion statement, all right, but I don't know if that's what you meant to say.

I keep seeing chicks around the law school with stiletto heels and blue jeans. I keep wondering if this is supposed to be a professional look. Or really, anything other than a working-the-corner look.

Trashy, not to mention very 1980's.

[identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Trashy" doesn't quite cover it; "really cheap diseased prostitute" is closer.

So this is something Paris Hilton does? I try to keep away from things about her, but Dave (my man) has been remarking on this stiletto/jeans or pants trend, and how dumb it looks. Now I know where it came from!

[identity profile] atomicnumber51.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been wearing stilettos with jeans since I've been wearing stiletto's, so let's say most of my adult life.

That said, although I did not grow up in a trailer park, growing up in Kentucky in general tends to warp the brain.

[identity profile] penguinicity.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Only being able to cast one vote for trashy leaves me feeling very unfulfilled.

[identity profile] katyakoshka.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a look I mentally associate with 1. the '80s and 2. '80s movies where blue-collar sorts get money/have money but little-to-no traditional class, and invade prim and proper middle-class suburbia (with its staid pumps, twin-set and skirt look).

That said, it isn't a daytime look. Evening, urban, clubbing... Makes me think of models in a more modern context -- but no one looking to project a professional court & offic appearance.

[identity profile] bouncepogo.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say trashy, but silly, definitely.

And my best friend BJ's full name is Bobbi Jo, what of it? :op

[identity profile] ariedana.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not so much a Paris thing as a Carrie Bradshaw/Sex and the City thing. And I think it really depends on the heels you wear with the jeans. Sandals make more sense than Jimmy Choos.

[identity profile] pokeyturtle.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, i'm neutral on the subject. i'd have to see how the overall look comes off on that particular individual. and personally, if i'm attending school and not going to work, i'll dress just any old way because it isn't being on the job. i refuse to look professional if i'm not in a professional situation.

[identity profile] poprockgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The trashiness is happening on this side of campus too.

Of course there are a lot of people with questionable fashion sense around here.

[identity profile] missrachael.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I just think it looks sloppy, actually.

[identity profile] sallerina.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
i pretty much always wear stilettos with jeans, so i am a little defensive/confused about this. what else am i supposed to wear with them? i think flip-flops are sloppy and too casual, i don't own sneakers aside from dirty smelly gym shoes, i don't like flat dress shoes and find most of them unattractive, it's too warm for boots, and i think chunky platform sandals are cheap and ugly. i always wear stilettos/high heels, so why not with jeans?

[identity profile] sibylla.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I find them sexy in a cheap, trailer-trash kind of way. That, and my very first girlfriend ever, way back in high school, sometimes wore fuck-me pumps with tight jeans. I think I'll always have a soft, squishy spot for it.

[identity profile] meemeedarling.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the look, as long as the rest of the outfit can pull it off. Fitted jeans with a fabulous top and good hair/make-up/jewelry are a must.

Whatever it is, it's not professional. At least, not work-professional.

I gotta take umbrage here

[identity profile] sempereadem.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Stiletto pumps, or stiletto boots? We get casual day on Fridays, and during the winter, I often wore jeans with my stiletto boots. Personally, to some it may look "trampy" or trashy, but I looked a lot less sloppy than those wearing sneakers, or sandals with socks. As long as your jeans aren't painted on and you're wearing a neat top, I don't see anything wrong with it.

[identity profile] spikepage.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose it all depends on what a girl's "profession" is.

IF her workday involves meeting her "clients" in hotels that rent rooms by the hour...
IF "on-the-job safety" involves a contraceptive sponge
IF she has a working-name is also something edible
IF she's ever uttered the words "You aren't a vice cop are you?"
IF she has a manager who wears a purple velvet hat and has gold teeth

..then and ONLY THEN can she wear jeans and stilettos... unless it's dress-down-Friday, in which case it's okay to show up in daisydukes and a tube-top wearing gogo boots.

Heels (the higher, the better) with jeans seems to be the NYC woman's uniform.

Maybe you have to be 5'8 and 98 pounds for it to work properly, because it looks great on them.

(And it goes without saying that that heels cost more than a student loan and the jeans mean you're gonna go without groceries for the next three months...not that they eat anyway.)

Re: high heels

[identity profile] wolfieboy.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I miss things. I've seen such things both look good and look more appropriate with a sequined tube top. It seems to really revolve around attitude and how they carry themselves...

[identity profile] polychromatic22.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
As many have already mentioned... if you can pull it off, sure. I do also agree with the strappy sandal variety of the stilettos instead of the closed toe. Additionally I also agree that this is mostly a nighttime/clubbing look and not professional.

Some women wear heels all the time simply because it gives them a height advantage they don't already have, or enhances what they do have. Others I know wear them all the time because they have high arches, and with high arches it's either really well made shoes of any sort with good formed to the foot soles, good tennis shoes or high heels, or serious pain.

All that said, look out for acid washed/stone washed jeans with this look. It's scary, it's 80's, and thank god it's over.

[identity profile] tropiquena.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I totally disagree with everyone who thought open-toed strappy stiletto heels look much better with jeans than do closed-toe stiletto pumps-- closed, pointy-toe stiletto pumps with an interesting detail are the only stilettos I'll even consider wearing with jeans. Then again, I don't like most sandal heels in general, except with certain cocktail dresses (or almost all formal evening dresses) that call for it. I don't think I even own a pair of sandal heels, heh. I just wear beaded Indian slippers, ballet flats, or leather flat sandals with everything. Woo!

With regard to the poll, though, it really does depend on the specific shoe and the specific pair of jeans (in addition to a person's build, general style/attitude, and the other clothes she's wearing)..

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There should be an option for "just plain weird". 'Cause I think that's just plain weird.

Are you dressing up, or dressing down? Make up your mind!

[identity profile] zitronenhai.livejournal.com 2005-04-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The girls around here wear their stiletto heels with really, really long jeans, too. So you can't even see the fucking shoes. You can see the pointy little toe and the pointy little heel, but the rest is covered with jean leg. So, their in all that pain and all that debt for nothing.

Yeah. I believe everyone who says it doesn't hurt to wear heels all day. Mm-hmm. Riiiiiight.

[identity profile] christikr.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
That reminds me of the Long Island JAPs that came down here for college. They wore frosted lipstick and eyeshadow too. Frightening women, they were.

[identity profile] blackacre.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've worn heels with jeans when they were too long otherwise...i don't think the fact that i am short and sometimes have to do that (or get the hemmed which i can't really afford right now) makes me white trash trash.

[identity profile] lordrexfear.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Just sounds dumb... really really really dumb!

[identity profile] stress-rash.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Where I'm from, it's considered trashy. That said, I guess what I consider trashy is in fashion with the jet-set. Everything becomes fashionable at some point or another. Hey, my parents thought I looked trashy when I'd wear lingerie tops with a leather jacket and spiked mohawk hair.

Personally, I think all heels higher than 1" should be burned. It's just another way for women to look helpless because that's pretty much what high heels do to you. Anyone who argues that point and I'll say "ever play basketball in heels? I have and I don't recommend it"

Brings to mind all those horror movies where the heroine tries to run and turns her ankle, thus needing to be rescued. Fuck that shit.

[identity profile] relevantpink.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't think it's trashy, don't like Paris Hilton. Have worn before and will wear again. Don't consider it particularly professional, however. I'm shocked by all the people who find this hopelessly trashy. *shrug*

[identity profile] sleepinbeauty.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I just imagine lots of little babies running around.

[identity profile] whitecrow0.livejournal.com 2005-04-13 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not voting because I'm not sold on either option. I just bought a pair of 40s style platform heels that make my too-long (not a petite, but too short for average length inseams and tailoring's a pain) flared-leg jeans perfect, and add the illusion of length to my stubby li'l legs. I would NOT wear an outfit including these two pieces at the office. But to go out at night? You betcha.

It reminds me of a student I saw in Woodruff this a.m. who was wearing a skin-tight denim mini-skirt that just barely covered her twat, black lace stockings and skanky-ho stillettos! Are you a college student or a prostitute? Oh, did I forget the bra-less seethrough spaghetti strap, midriff baring top, complete with "headlights" since it was so chilly in the library?
